riverview: rules and procedures

rules and procedures

rules

Play nice. If you are making the OOC atmosphere of the game toxic for fellow players or the moderator, there will be consequences. This includes all the standard accepted rules of roleplay: don't infomod or godmode, keep IC separate from OOC, don't fourth-wall without permission, stay in character, and don't try to hog the spotlight all the time. All offenses will be handled on a case-by-case basis, as no two situations are the same. The mod reserves the right to issue warnings or remove players from the game, depending how serious the offense is, and to refuse applications or reserves based on a strongly demonstrated history of toxic behavior.

procedures

Reserves will be open from 10:00 PM EST on the 15th of every month until 10:00 pm EST on the 1st of every month, when applications open; reserves will be valid until 10:00 pm EST on the 7th of every month, when the application cycle closes and the reserves page will be cleared.

Applications will be open from 10:00 PM EST on the 1st of every month until 10:00 PM EST on the 7th of every month. Application challenges are not currently an option, though applications may be submitted for a reserved character in case the reserver doesn't follow through or is declined.

Character caps will be 2 per person with subsequent character slots to be purchased with activity points to a maximum of 4 characters per person. There will be an overall game character cap of 125 characters. These caps may be re-evaluated depending on moderator workload. There will be a cast cap of 15 characters per canon; this may be re-evaluated as needed.

Activity Check will be open from 10:00 PM EST on the 1st of every month until 10:00 PM EST on the 7th of every month. All comments used as activity proofs must be dated between the first and last days of the month and be posted to an entry from either the current or previous month.

● All players will be required to submit 1 thread of 10 or more comments for Activity Check proof.
● However, if your comments are 150 words or more, only 5 comments will be required. In this case, the 5 comments do not need to be consecutive, but they must be part of the same thread.
● Borderline word count comments will generally be 'rounded up.' For examples of what 150 word comments look like, please click here.
● In all cases, threads may be from either the log or network communities.

● Newly accepted characters will not have to provide activity proofs for their first month. They will be required to provide a link to their response on the Taken Characters page, and, if applicable, the Occupations page.
● If a player fails to reply to Activity Check they will be swept, and it will be treated as a drop, including the one-week grace period to rejoin without an application. If a character is swept for non-response and wishes to rejoin during the grace period, they would need to provide activity proof at that time.
● If a player doesn't have enough proof of activity, they may post to the Activity Check with a request for a strike. There is no option for two strikes in a row, so proof must be posted the next month or the character will be swept. If players are showing a pattern of taking a strike every second month, that will be dealt with privately on a case-by-case basis.
● While threads on the Test Drive Meme and individual character inboxes can be submitted for Activity Points, they cannot be used for regular Activity Check.

Activity check standards have been put in place as of April 2018. These standards have been put in place to ensure that players are engaging with the game at large rather than sandboxing or squatting. Players submitting AC that shows a low level of engagement with the game for three months in a row (from any of the bullet points below) will be given a reminder to submit stronger AC the following month. If this reminder is ignored for three months in a row, the player will receive a strike for Activity Participation. Two strikes (total of 9 months low-engagement AC) will be considered grounds for removal from the game. The following types of AC submissions are considered low-engagement:

● Split AC: This is when a player submits two short proofs instead of one proof to AC standard. This type of split proof is intended only to avoid a strike in the event of a rough month and shouldn't be relied upon consistently.

● Castmate/Close CR AC: This is when a player consistently submits AC-length threads only with castmates, ship partners, or other close CR. This is one I don't always catch because I am not completely familiar with the relationships that every character in the game has, but I do notice when AC is submitted very consistently with only one other character or group of characters. Please note that attempting to circumvent this by just threading with the same friend's second character will be noticed and counted under this bullet.

● Late AC: This is when a player makes AC but is consistently on the warning list

Appable characters include fandom characters, original characters, or AU versions of characters that appear in canon and have a personality distinguishably different from the original. Characters should have sufficient released information in English (or translated to English) to form a personality that is less than half headcanon, and be from a canon that has been released for a month or more at the time of application.

Non-appable characters include fandom-based original characters, AU versions of characters that are not supported by canon, and characters so minor that a case cannot be made for their personality without large amounts of headcanon. Characters who are non-humanoid will not be accepted, except in certain specific cases where the character is partially humanoid (eg. centaurs, robotic characters, or shape-shifters) - if you are uncertain if your character fits this description, please contact the mod via PM. CRAU characters may be considered on a case-by-case basis with extra scrutiny and application requirements to ensure that the character is still recognizable and will not cause undue problems for any castmates - if you wish to apply for a CRAU character, please contact the mod in advance.

Malleable protagonists from games like Mass Effect or Dragon Age are appable, providing they are applied with a solid and consistent personality that matches what is presented in the game and are applied as if no romance options were taken in order to avoid discomfort for any NPC castmates; this would go both ways - anyone apping the NPC castmates would have to app as if they were not romanced as well. Exception added June 1st: Malleable protagonists from dating sims or games that cannot be played without a romance option can be appable with a chosen romantic interest so long as said castmate is comfortable with it.

Characters who are dead in canon can be brought in from the moment of their death. When they arrive, they will immediately be transported to the hospital, where they will be treated with futuristic medical procedures and put through the usual orientation while they recover over a period of 24 hours.

Young or teen characters are allowed in Riverview, though younger characters may not be able to fully participate in dangerous missions, depending on suitability. Characters under 18 may not be involved in very sexual logs on the communities. Obviously making out and other romantic content is fine, as is fade to black for older teens, but please avoid smut with underage characters on the communities. CLARIFICATION ADDED 03/20/2018: This includes Friendr posts, IC inboxes, and other entries linked from the Taken page, all considered game canon.

While the game is sex-positive, non-consensual sex should not be played on the communities. Mechanics in the game are not put in place to encourage sexual assault, or to 'trick' characters into having sex that they would not normally have. This includes any objects, drugs, aphrodisiacs, or other mechanics used in adult prompts to facilitate consensual sex. If guidelines are included in these prompts to keep everything consensual, it is the player's responsibility to carefully read and follow those guidelines, but even if no guidelines are included, these prompts should not be used to play out non-consensual sex or to trick characters into sex they would not consent to normally.

Character abilities will not be nerfed unless they involve interdimensional travel or use of interdimensional spaces, or are otherwise gamebreaking. Please be aware that, ICly, the authorities in Riverview are capable of temporarily nerfing abilities in cases of violence or vandalism - please contact the mod if you need this type of interference in a thread.

Characters may arrive with whatever they have on their person including vehicles up to the size of a large motorcycle, or non-sentient animals/familiars up to the size of a large horse.

The communities are: [community profile] riverview for network posting, [community profile] riverviewlogs for in-person interactions, and [community profile] riverviewooc for OOC interactions and memes. Tagging should be done in the form of "canon name: character name" and players are responsible for their own tagging. Please see this entry for more information on how the devices and network works.

Canon updates are possible - it is ICly very difficult for characters to travel back and forth from their world to Riverview, so they would not be sent back home and brought back. Rather, the portal would expel a tech canister containing code for a memory download and physical restructuring (similar to the tech used for AC reward body mods) and the character would be summoned to receive them. Characters need to consent to the update, the authorities won't force it on them.

Hey Mod!

Would it be possible to have a character kill an NPC? And if so, what kind of IC consequences would they face, if any?

Hi moddo~

Characters receive a bioscan when they arrive, but are they also shown the information that's written on their record? Yonah's a replicant/clone and I assume that's on her file after her arrival. But she doesn't know that. She just believes she's a human. Would it be kept a secret from her?

I'm just curious to know/want to clarify why there's a difference between MMO characters and characters from things like tabletop games? They're both the same idea/premise as in creating a character in a set world from a medium that's made to create OCs?

Edit: Also, if a character canon updates but they no longer have a body, is it possible to get a new one somehow? Like, in canon they could grow a new one in a special magic tank if there was some blood or hair or something, would that be possible to get via points?

And would they lose the body via canisters or would they just get the memories? Essentially Lup turns into a ghost in later canon.

Quick question about canon updates: By "physical restructuring," do you mean changes that happen to a character physically? Specifically, the point I'm thinking of eventually updating Bill to, she would no longer technically be human. Would the "physical restructuring" be able to handle such a change?

Expanding on canon update info. Some general stuff, and some character or CRAU specific because of course. Mostly I'm wondering how much freedom we have with the canisters. I'm still very much tentatively considering this and haven't decided yet, so nothing definite in the plans but I wanted to check in about some ideas before making a choice either way.

1. How do canon updates work, on an IC level?

I get that they're like bodymods and you get your little canister of info but - what does a character do with the canister? Is it like a medical procedure they need to check into a hospital for? Do they just pop the canister open and it happens all at once on it's own? Could it be something that happens overnight, so they wake up the next morning different?

2. In the case of a CRAU that has aged past their canon, would the character de-age?

Specifically for Ed, he's nearing 22 but his canon only goes until he's 18 so would he reverse in age the same way others age up? His hair is also much longer than it is in canon (which has become somewhat of an in-joke in game), would it just revert to canon length as well?

3. Also CRAU related, in this case character specific, but I'm sure there might be something similar in game at some point.

Basically Ed has a lot of scars, most of which are from canon. A few are from his previous game. In his canon he loses his scars at the end of the series thanks to his brother, this happens after the canon point I've taken him from. Would he lose all scars, just canon scars, would this be optional/up to player discretion?

4. I would, hypothetically, like to play Ed's canon update a little messy. For instance, he gets his memories back but the physical changes don't all happen etc. If this isn't something that is normally acceptable to do, I was wondering if an exception could be made in the case of a player plot. With the memory share plot coming up I was considering having Ed canon updated right before that happened as possibly one of the first indications something is amiss.

Would that be permissible?

Can I get a more in depth explanation for Canon AU, or an example? I have seen various definitions of it that differ slightly depending on context. So I wish to make sure I have the right understanding of it based on this game.

Hi again, mods! Just a few hopefully simple questions! If a character arrived with a device from home and is using it for network capabilities, would that device still have any files (ie. music) on it or would it have been completely wiped?

Also, I think this may have been kind of answered, but I want to double check to play it safe! Arisu's production studio already has released a few song albums - would she be able to find any of it in the Quarantine? Or can I say she's unable to find any of her studio's albums/or maybe it's just super rare? I just thought the latter option might be more fun to play out.

Just double-checking since I don't want to assume, but would Toothless fall under the "size of a large horse" rule? His body is probably about draft horse sized, and he fits into buildings / gets through doorways easily enough in canon. If he's too big to come in on arrival, would it be approved as an activity reward?

But is the gun range part of the perimeter guard training grounds, or is it sort of isolated off by itself?

Would a Robin Hood type thief (a la the Leverage crew) be able to find things to do within Riverview? Mostly since let's be real, if you know Leverage Parker is the type that needs a project/con to stay busy and its really all she knows (beyond some headcanon jobs I've given her for cover jobs set between seasons).

As far as characters who start from when they die, if they died from being shot in the head or something, will they still have a scar from the spot where the wound was? If it's not the usual, can a player choose to keep the death injury? Thanks!

Quick question!

Stephen's been kinda working in some off-time on a way to be able to eat something other than cosmic horror-terrors. Would it be something I'd need to get through the AP system, or could we say it's something he wound up making work? I'm figuring it's basically a potion that lets him digest normal food/etc while it's in his system- kinda like how medicine for lactose intolerance operates. Doesn't mean he gets the nutrients, he's still required to eat his horror-wheaties because I'm not that nice, but he can at least partake of normal things)

Thinking about dropping Thea into the next TDM so fast question!

I'm looking at a late S3 pull point (when she's stabbed by Ra's Al Ghul) but before things get bad enough to require the pit if you know Arrow canon (plus let's be honest, that arc was a mess). Would she be able to get prompt medical care once she's dropped in via the portal (and how long would she be laid up)? And would trigger warnings be needed since I want to explore the fallout from that whole experience as part of her character journey.

QUICK QUESTION SO--!!!

Is it possible for a... small toy doll to slip through the cracks without being recognized as an actually 'living' thing? I was considering bringing this guy in sometime, but I'd love for it to start out as a covert sort of plotline where he hides out for a while and only uses voice and text as time widdles his cover down.

But then I realize if he's found out right out of the gate, he'll probably drop the act altogether or at least realize he's already broken toy code, so that would change how he's played...!! My primary question is more of a -- "what would happen, if a limp and apparently non-living doll comes through the portal?"

Heya mod!!

I play All Might here, and I just wanted to check my options -- is it possible in theory to make video/voice 'anonymous' too? You see, he is a superhero and I was wondering for future events, would he be able to broadcast under his hero identity without giving away his civilian identity?

Or is it possible for him to ask the Riverview head honchos for a secondary username for his hero identity? :)

Hello mods! Played here for a short time (as Yonah and Arisu) and considering giving a different kind of character a try on the next TDM to try to see if he sticks long term.

I'm not sure if anyone on the mod team is familiar on Tales of Berseria (or Zestiria), but I'm thinking of apping in Laphicet. He's part of a spiritual race called Malakhim, that's normally not perceived by humans unless they have high resonance and it's something I'd like to play out in-game.

I imagine it might not be much of a problem in Riverview since it's a multiverse of different races, so other species will see him easily. However, I don't want to bar human characters from getting CR with him and was thinking of setting down some guidelines. For example, human characters can eventually see him if they hang around the same places as him for a long time, humans that are already spiritually-inclined in their canon, ANYONE can perceive him via communication device, etc. Just a few ideas! Would this be acceptable?

Secondly, he is dependent on having a vessel, which can be a person or an object. In canon, malevolence (negative emotions, impurities of humans) is like a poison to his race. He requires dwelling inside or being within range of his vessel to avoid succumbing to that poison. I'm very likely to app as an LCW, without his human vessel and I have not fully decided if this is something I want to play out or do away with. But if I do decide to play it out, can he be provided an object to use as a vessel (maybe his device or something)?

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to answer this. I have a few questions. ♥

Persona 5 brings in the idea of cognitive reaction. Meaning that Akira and his friends don't take on their "Phantom Thief" look until the dungeon recognizes them as a threat. The game plays a lot on the duality of "normal life" and "sneaky thief life."

1) How should the ability to change into "Joker" be handled on an application? Would Akira retain the ability to change into his thief outfit, or is this something that should be handled through Activity Points? Either option is fine with me!

2) Would the Normal Life/Phantom Thief aspect be able to be played in Riverview? As in being able to pull off being "Joker", while doing the normal school kid thing. I'm namely curious that way I can properly handle it, as Akira is a canon trouble maker. Don't want to break the society too badly.
