There isn't actually any one set device for use in Riverview, and characters are free to pick and choose whatever kind of device they'd like. If an illiterate character came through the portal, they would definitely receive options for devices that were usable for them in orientation. (They would probably also receive information on literacy courses at the University because the orientation assistants are helpful like that.) The same would go for characters with sensory limitations like deafness or blindness.
