Hi Heather! Thanks for your question. There is no AC point cost for canon updating via canister, even if it means gaining new powers. If it's something the character has in canon, there is no cost to bring it into the game.

You're absolutely able to use the canon update as a hiatus. You can play this anyway you'd like, from the canister taking a while to work to a malfunction, or whatever else works for your personal plot.
