For special circumstances like Sans, I would probably handle it on a case-by-case basis, as these kinds of special circumstances probably couldn't be handled with one blanket policy. My goal is for players to have fun in the game, so if something doesn't quite fit under the established rule, I'll work with the player one-on-one to make sure it doesn't break the game mechanics or rules, but still allows them to play enjoyably.
