While Wikus was speaking in gibberish, the translation magic likely wouldn't work, and people would be hearing gibberish. If he's stuck in this between period, texting could probably work, if he was capable.
As soon as he is able to speak the Prawn language, it would be translated. How you want it to sound is up to you - either of your suggestions would work, and since it's magic, it can change from character to character. The same would go for other "real life" languages or languages from alien planets.

Essentially, it's a very flexible spell and can work in a lot of different ways.
