Q: What is the verdict on trans headcanons for characters who disguise themselves as the gender opposite of their sex designated at birth? What if they are found out but continue to dress in that way? What about characters who are treated in canon or meta with the attitude owed to the gender opposite their sex designated at birth?
A: After giving this a bit of thought, I would prefer that characters not be played as trans unless it is explicitly stated in canon. While I understand the desire for more representation, I feel it is treading dangerous territory to use stereotypes, tropes, or plot-related 'disguises' as evidence for a character being trans. It could also be considered disrespectful to people who are trans to reduce their life experience to these tropes, plot devices, or stereotypes.
Being trans is an incredibly vulnerable position in our society, both online and offline, and any trans issues need to be handled with appropriate sensitivity.
