Considering the ruling about knock-off movies, books, and TV shows was mostly made for the sake of avoiding fourth-walling unless both parties agree, music should be alright. Since the cases of people applying from non-musical songs is pretty rare, I would say that characters can find music from home or other realities, worlds, etc. quite easily.
The only exception would be if the song or album contained a character complete and well-developed enough be apped (again, not common unless it is in a musical like Hamilton) or if the band members were fictional and could be applied for (in situations like Gorillaz or other similar bands).
