player information
name: Ramey
age: 30
contact: [plurk.com profile] exposition
other characters: Alec Brennan

character information
name: X’rhun Tia
canon: Final Fantasy XIV
canon point: Pre-Stormblood, having just arrived in Ul’dah
age: Unknown, but based on his backstory and dialogue from other characters, I’d say he’s somewhere in his 50s.

(canon) background: Final Fantasy XIV takes place in the land of Eorzea, and being an MMO, the story follows the adventures of the player character as they stop wars, kill gods, and all around save the day with the sheer power of being The Main Character. The world is a bit more traditional fantasy with some steampunk elements, though other nations in the world have a greater mastery of technology, usually to make up for a lack of magical prowess. In the latest expansion, Stormblood, red mages were introduced as a playable class.

X’rhun is the NPC who teaches the player character (who will now be referred to as the Warrior of Light or WoL) how to become a red mage. Even if the WoL chooses not to unlock the red mage class, X’rhun is mentioned by Alisaie, one of the WoL’s other NPC allies, as it is revealed that she has learned red magic from X’rhun while she was traveling.

If the WoL chooses to unlock the red mage class, they meet X’rhun just outside the city of Ul’dah. The WoL is beseeched by a small girl in the city to help find her missing sister, and upon stepping out of the gates, it is revealed that X’rhun has found the missing girl and is standing between her and a group of armed men. X’rhun easily dispatches the men with a flourish and with the WoL in tow, returns the girl to her sister’s side.

Later, over drinks, X’rhun reveals that he knows who the WoL is, either through Alisaie’s stories or through the news that has recently come from his home country of Ala Mhigo. (Stormblood’s story revolves around freeing Ala Mhigo from the oppressive rule of the Garlean Empire, who had invaded about twenty years prior to the start of FFXIV. So, the reaction X’rhun has to the Warrior of Light depends on where the player is in the story when they choose to do the red mage quests. ~MMO continuity~) He then offers the WoL the chance to learn red magic, and when the WoL agrees, he reveals that he will give his lessons while the two of them travel around, helping those in need.

Over the course of the questline, X’rhun explains that red magic was born in Ala Mhigo ages ago, when refugees from both sides of a war between black and white mages came together. The two groups set aside their differences and combined their schools of magic to create red magic. Centuries after the first red mages came to be, Ala Mhigo was invaded by the Empire. X’rhun and several others uncovered the scrolls containing the secrets of red magic, and donned the red as the Crimson Duelists to fight alongside the Ala Mhigan resistance.

Then one day, X’rhun returned from scouting to discover the Duelists had all been murdered in cold blood by one of their own, a man named Lambard who had joined sides with the imperial invaders. As the last of the Duelists, X’rhun spent twenty years searching for Lambard, but found no trace of him. During that time, and up until he meets the WoL, X’rhun traveled the world, offering his blade and his magic in the service of those who cannot fight for themselves.

abilities: Red mages are somewhat unique in the world of XIV. Black and white mages draw upon the aether (life force/magical energy) of the world around them for their spells, and while white mages seek to live in harmony and balance with nature, trying to give back to the world as they take from it, black mages can be extremely destructive to their environment to the point where black magic is, in fact, illegal.

Red mages, whose skills are born out of a combination of black and white magic, draw from their own internal sources of aether, using their own bodies as a conduit for their magic. This might limit them in comparison to the pure destructive power of a black mage or the sheer healing ability of a white mage, but red mages get by with striking a perfect balance between the two and spending the energies they build up though powerful melee attacks.

As the WoL’s red mage mentor, X’rhun has all the skills of a level 70 red mage, which can be found here. (Job Actions and Traits only. The Role Actions are exclusive to player characters.) A quick note about the spell Verraise: Canonically, magic cannot bring people back from the dead without resorting to some very dark and twisted stuff. Player characters who reach 0 HP don’t technically die, and instead are said to fall unconscious. A raise spell is used to wake them up and heal them somewhat. This is how this spell will function in Riverview as well.

It is also worth noting that X’rhun is a Miqo’te, specifically a Seeker of the Sun. Miqo’te have feline features, such as pointed, furry ears, a tail, and Seekers specifically have slit-pupiled eyes. Miqo’te are a race of hunters, with excellent reflexes, powerful muscles, and an enhanced sense of smell.

strengths:
Intelligent: X’rhun is no slouch when it comes to many subjects. He’s well-versed in history, especially the history of red magic, which he gives to the WoL in detail, geography, and even herbs. He’s also quite the detective, able to unearth a plot by a cult that has been kidnapping young men and women, by quickly pick up on leads and exercising a pretty good knowledge of the law to get the authorities involved at the right juncture.

Caring: When the Crimson Duelists were formed, they swore an oath to aid those in need “with heart and steel.” It is an oath that X’rhun still very much believes in and tries to uphold, even as the last of his order. He will jump to the aid of anyone who needs it, whether he knows them or not.

Capable: Even at his age, X’rhun moves and fights without any problems. When the questline finally leads him and the WoL to Lambard, the man who slew the Duelists, Lambard laments that X’rhun has always been the better fighter. X’rhun manages to best Lambard, even though Lambard has greatly augmented his abilities with forbidden means. It’s only through an underhanded use of those means that Lambard gains the advantage, otherwise X’rhun is a formidable opponent.

weaknesses:
Idealistic: His caring nature might also be seen as a weakness. He’s well-aware that the oath of the Duelists and the way he runs around championing for people he barely knows must seem foolish— in fact, word for word, he refers to himself as an “idealistic fool” to the WoL. While that faith in people and that desire to help anyone no matter what is admirable, he knows that it will likely get him into trouble one day.

Stubborn: When Lambard quite literally tries to suck the soul from his body, leaving him bleeding a vulnerable, he urges the WoL and Arya, another apprentice of his, to run. He’s not necessarily self-sacrificing, because he doesn’t actively try to place himself in mortal danger whenever he can, but he’s determined that this is his battle and he should see it through, even when he has the Hero of Eorzea willing to fight for him.

Blunt: X’rhun has a habit of saying what’s on his mind, whether it’s an innocuous observation or a bit of teasing at one of his comrade’s expense. He never tries to be malicious with these remarks, and often they are made as jokes, but sometimes he pushes a bit too far.

job skills (optional): X’rhun is an accomplished fighter and a pretty effective detective as well. He will admit that first and foremost, he wants to help people.
housing (optional): Any!
