character information
name: Daenerys Targaryen (and many, many titles)
canon: Game of Thrones / A Song of Ice and Fire
canon point: End of 7x07
age: 22-ish

(canon) background: Here & here & further info

If allowed: while I'm playing Dany having gone through the show's version of events, I believe her chapters in the books up until the end of ADWD offer a valuable insight into her motivations and character that aren't necessarily made clear on the show. Emilia Clarke (like Kit Harington) does her best to convey what's going on in her mind through her facial expressions and tone, but that's realistically only going to convey so much.

abilities:
🔥 immunity to damage & injury from heat/fire
🔥 clever tactician
🔥 administration/ruling
🔥 riding dragonback
🔥 multilingual (at least fluent in High Valyrian, the common tongue & Dothraki)
🔥 negotiation & diplomacy
🔥 leadership
🔥 conquering places

The following is book-only, but I'd like her to keep:

🔥 dragon dreams

Separately:

It'd be great if Dany could receive her dragons (or at least Drogon) as AC rewards! Their size and/or power could be limited, if that might be an issue. The show and books give her an unspoken, empathic/psychic connection with Drogon in particular, as he seems to reflect her mood and/or know when she is in distress. There's a passage in the books where she screams, (during sex, admittedly, however:) and she's unsure if it was Drogon or her making the sound. Also, he shows up when she's upset and then later, to rescue her from the Sons of the Harpy.

The biggest difference between book and show in this case is that she needs neither a whip nor a magical horn to gain control of him in the show.

strengths:

i. but we are not men:
Thanks to a lifetime of abuse, Dany has a "gentle heart" when it comes to those the show labels as the "downtrodden." She starts small within her husband's khalasar, freeing women who'd otherwise be raped and enslaved. By the time she's widowed, she turns that into a full-on crusade against the Masters of Slaver's Bay and refuses to leave and pursue her own desires (to go home) until its slaves are freed and under their own rule.

ii. fire cannot kill a dragon:
Call it pride or confidence; she has both in spades. No longer a meek girl, a string of hard-won victories have emboldened Dany and given her the notion that she can accomplish anything she sets her mind to; no matter the nature of the methods used, in some cases. It enables her to succeed further and even go against her Hand's advice and triumph where his council fails her, but. It's a double-edged sword.

iii. i will answer injustice with justice:
Dany's moral compass is rigidly set to do 'the right thing.' Grey areas don't exist in her mind for much of her arc, and she's challenged time and again on that score. It led her to feed men to her dragons and burn the Tarlys as an example. Questionable? Sure. 'Mad Queen' material? No.

weaknesses:

i. waking the dragon:
Despite herself, Dany certainly has inherited the bad temper which House Targaryen is known for. She lashes out many times at others, as when Ser Barristan is murdered and she brings a group of Masters before her children... and has one killed as an example. Or when Tyrion brings up the matter of succession, and she becomes chilly and fiery all at once in her displeasure. She doesn't take well at all to betrayal, and her dismissal of Jorah from Meereen is a great example of that.

ii. fire and blood:
That moral compass is also a weakness in that she can't easily bend and compromise. No, she's not a Mad Queen, but she is inexperienced in taking care with how she deals with complaints and complex issues laid at her door. A man brought her the bones of his daughter; she locked up her dragons. Mossador killed a Son of the Harpy, so she had him publicly executed. Both wrong things done for the right reasons. And both cost her.

iiii. my reign has just begun:
That same confidence that's such a well-earned strength is also to her detriment. She can't see how her Hand has a point... to a point after x many of his clever plans fail her. She thinks dragonfire can solve everything because it worked so well in Essos. Dany has a lot to learn, like it or not. How to do things in half-measures occasionally being one of them. Jon helps her a great deal in this regard, but she still has a ways to go yet.
