character information ● name: David "Dave" Stutler ● canon: The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010 movie) ● canon point: Post-canon ● age: 20 ● (canon) background:Summary of the film - Dave's biography
● abilities:
-Science: Dave is a scientist, his specialty being physics (though he's also the kind of guy who knows lots of random trivia). If you need any help with experiments, fixing stuff, machines/electricity, this genius is the guy to go.
-Magic: Dave is also a sorcerer, descendant of Merlin and heir of his magic (which makes him the "Prime Merlinean"). Sorcerers in this universe are people born with the capability to use the entire power of their brains. Instead of wands like in most stories, these sorcerers use rings to cast their magic. The rings project the electrical energy of their nervous system into the physical world, allowing them to modify anything around them as they wish. However, as the Prime Merlinean, Dave doesn't need his ring to cast his magic.
He's still an apprentice with lots to learn, so please don't let the description of his magic think he's some sort of super OP god. He COULD be, but that's still some time away. For example, I headcanon he still puts the ring on to train and while he's still mastering new spells until he gets the hang of them. He's also been taught to use magic responsibly, so he won't go around trying to mess with everyone. Magic in this universe is presented mostly as a form of being creative with the laws of physics, but that doesn't mean there aren't spells, which go from transmutation to bending of the elements.
Here is a post (that I wrote myself) with a full explanation of his magic and other spells available. It should also be noted that Dave counts with enhanced durability. This doesn't make him Superman or anything like that, but he's definitively more resistant to hits (physical or magical) than the average human - they still hurt though. It's also implied he's gonna live quite longer than average people. And lastly, the one way for sorcerers in this universe to lose their powers is electrocution.
● strengths: -Book smart Dave is very intelligent - when it comes to the sciences at least. It's even implied that he's skipping years in college! Dave understands and learns concepts pretty quickly and, while it may take some practice to actually do a spell right, he's good at applying those concepts in a new (and maybe even creative!) way when the situation needs it. -Reliable He may whine a bit about it first, that's for sure. But at the end of the day, there's no doubt about it: you can count on Dave. He does it because helping people is important, yes, but also because he seeks approval. He hates letting people down and being a disappointment. -Passionate He calls himself sappy, which is also right - he's a sap, a romantic, and he won't shut up about topics he loves. Dave pours his heart in what he does - a pure heart, according to his master, and he wears that heart in his sleeve. Which is a double-edged sword of course... but that's for another section. -Pacifist Dave hates conflict, and will only engage if necessary (to help someone, for example). He's not easy to provoke, since he's used to being made fun of after spending most of his school life being bullied. (Unless it's a dumb argument on the internet. GenericRPG #2 was way better than GenericRPG #1, how dare you.)
● weaknesses: -Low self-esteem A pretty standard case of being "the outcast". Dave doesn't think very highly of himself. And while accepting magic in his life and getting a girlfriend have improved his confidence quite a bit, it's been mostly a boost of giving Dave hope for the future and his potential to achieve great things. Meanwhile, he still feels pretty out of place in most average situations. -Awful liar Wearing his heart in his sleeve means Dave isn't good at controlling his emotions when it matters. Even the bad guy comments on what a terrible liar he is, and that very same bad guy takes advantage of Dave's feelings and insecurities to get what he wants for his plan. This also why he can be a bit blunt with his commentary. -Socially awkward You'd think someone who has lived in New York all his life would be better with crowds. And sure, it's not a problem when it's "faceless" crowds, just a bunch of people that are too busy to notice the guy walking next to them. But parties? Gatherings? Meetings? Dave just isn't into that. He's very introverted, preferring the company of just one or two people he trusts, books and his dog over partying. And when he does engage people, he comes off as very awkward, blunt and feeling out of place (as described above). -Holds grudges Dave does not forget. It could be a good thing, since that means he'll always remember anyone that share a minute of their time with him. But his main issue is not letting go of the wrongs of the past - forgiveness isn't exactly something he gives easily.
● job skills (optional): Pretty much what it says in the abilities section: science and magic. Since they're here to contribute to the rebuilding (terraforming?) of this moon, Dave would express interest in helping developing methods and help with research (maybe do some exploring too FOR SCIENCE!- I mean for the new discoveries). ● housing (optional):Shared floor, if possible. ● network username:catstate
● network sample: from the test drive: one - two ● prose/action sample:
Dave used to be a pretty anti-superstitions kind of guy. But since he accepted sorcery in his life, he sees stuff like rituals with new eyes. Maybe there's something in them after all, even if it's just some sort of placebo effect. Wouldn't that be a kind of magic of its own?
So here he is now, watching the bonfires that have been set up all along the beaches of the river with a notebook under his arm. There are a lot of people here... which he should've expected, he knows, this is a festival after all. But it still makes him nervous. As a New Yorker, crowds of unknown faces aren't a big deal for him, but this is more like a party, with people making conversation and commenting on their notes. Dave isn't good at parties, and he isn't sure he wants to share his notes. What is he going to write anyway? Mmmh...
in some parts of the tri-state area they still refer to having a nervous breakdown as "pulling a David Stutler"
He stares at the words that leave his pen with quite an ease (he has so many issues to deal with after all) and decides to burn it with a magic spark of fire that appears with a snap of his fingers. It's... satisfying as hell, he realizes. Like he's finally managing to leave that behind, like he could truly believe he has a chance to start over here, around people that don't know the embarrassing stories that haunt him.
This little bit of found confidence pushes him to approach the bonfires. Maybe he can give them a chance after all.
