character information
name: Amilyn Holdo
canon: Star Wars
canon point: After her last scene in TLJ, you know the one
age: mid-fifties

(canon) background: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Amilyn_Holdo

abilities: Military strategist, politician since her teens, trained pilot, leadership/management, wide-ranging knowledge of different star systems and astrological/folk traditions thereon.

strengths:
intelligent, strategic thinker: after Leia was incapacitated, Holdo devised a plan to get as many Resistance fighters to safety as possible; having thought out all the options, she planned a strategic retreat to Crait, which would ideally leave the First Order forces pursuing empty vessels while the transport craft got safely away. In her youthful adventures with Leia, her resourcefulness and knowledge of multiple star systems got them out of several scrapes.

brave, altruistic: she didn’t hesitate to remain on the Raddus to ensure that the Resistance transport ships got away, and when it was clear that there was only one way to stop the First Order, she used the cruiser as a missile to take down the Supremacy.

strong leadership abilities: Poe’s ill-considered mutiny notwithstanding, it’s clear that the Resistance forces in the main have a lot of confidence in her, and she has a proven military track record as attested by her rank and the fact that she’s famous for whatever happened at Chyron Belt.

weaknesses:
dubious emotional intelligence: more so when she was a young woman (she cheerfully tells Leia that she’s looking forward to the Apprentice Legislators’ Outward Bound-style survival trip as an opportunity to get accustomed to “the nearness and inevitability of death”); as an adult, she’s learned to be diplomatic, but she doesn’t always read people correctly or modulate her responses appropriately.

personal eccentricity: in its mildest form, it manifests as her fondness for dyeing her hair (something that goes back to her teens, when she began doing it as a reaction against the sedate aesthetic of her homeworld Gatalenta); at its most extreme, she simply doesn’t particularly care what anyone thinks of her, and she sometimes ends up grating on people’s nerves. She also doesn’t feel the need to present herself as A Military Type—her clothes and style on the Raddus look more suited to a Senatorial seat than a command bridge. Which is all well and good, but it has led people to underestimate her.

arrogance: the flip side of her leadership skills—she’s something of a stickler for military chain of command, and when she gives orders, she expects them to be obeyed and gets annoyed when she’s questioned. She believes in her own rectitude and sometimes overcorrects in asserting her authority. She has a tendency to think that a little eccentricity and impulsiveness is fine for her (she was definitely more impulsive in her teens), but not necessarily for other people.

job skills (optional): leadership experience, piloting skills
housing (optional): anywhere is fine

Astrology’s a funny thing. Every world, somewhere back in its history, has some kind of lore about the stars, about how they function as auguries, or how they determine individual fates. You’d think that an intergalactic civilization would put paid to that sort of thing—but it persists on each world, and not only that, but you can triangulate some interesting correspondences amongst different planetary traditions if you know your interstellar navigation well enough.

[A small laugh.] Indulge an eccentric, won’t you—if you have such traditions where you come from, I’d like to hear about them. And if you’ve heard anything about astrology amongst the locals, tell me more.
