● abilities: Superhuman Strength and Invulnerability: John has superhumanly dense musculature that gives him enhanced strength sufficient enough to rip open steel doors, smash through concrete walls, and allows him near invulnerability to physical harm. In canon, he is shown to get shot multiple times without any effect - the bullets don’t break the skin. Marcos calls him ‘bulletproof’. Superhuman Speed: John’s dense muscle allows him to exert great force in his movements to achieve a level of superhuman speed. For example, his reflexes are fast enough to catch projectiles mid-air. Tracking Skills/Enhanced senses: John is an expert tracker, able to follow a target for miles, due to enhanced senses and foresight. Foresight: This ability allows him to see glimpses of the recent past and near future when focusing on a specific location or person. Skilled Combatant: As a former soldier, John is naturally adept in physical combat without the need of his enhanced physicality, as is shown when his powers are nullified by another mutant. (Happy for any and all of these skills to be nerfed if required!)
● strengths: Leadership: John was personally chosen by the X-Men to lead the South-East branch of the Mutant Underground. A natural leader, his stature, calm demeanor, and tactical mind makes him someone that people look to and respect. He is shown to break up fights and arguments, as well as leading planning, research, and mission deployments. He often takes the lead during missions as well, and isn’t scared about making tough decisions. Caring: John is not one to hesitate before throwing himself in front of danger to protect others - he does it in canon repeatedly (saving Andy from the Sentinel when he trips, shielding Andy and Lauren from a truck, shielding Clarice from a hail of bullets, catching Lorna when she’s thrown into the air, etc.). He also refuses to stop taking in refugees even when resources are scarce, and is always shown to work towards the greater good - a normal life for all Mutants, and he always puts the Mutants’ needs ahead of his own. He is also shown to care on a deeper, more personal level - for Sonia, but mainly for Clarice, offering her comfort when she finds her foster family having been killed. Self-control: due to his abilities, and through his military training, John has gained extremely good self-control. He is always very self-aware, very much in touch with his powers, how to tap into them, when to keep them in check. But even outside of his powers, he is very much someone in check, self-possessed, very controlled - unlike Marcos and Lorna, he is not prone to rash decisions, preferring to think things through and making plans before jumping into the action.
● weaknesses: Self-control: while it is a strength, it is also a weakness. He can’t quite let go of his control, rendering him somewhat emotionally unavailable at times - he refuses to acknowledge his feelings for Clarice time and again, preferring to hide behind the fight and how focused he needs to stay, and also refuses to show weakness, even when in mourning. It also makes his far and few between violent outbursts seem even worse; while they’re not usual, they show that his self-control is sometimes making matters worse for him as he pretends not to have feelings. Guilt: One of the reasons John fights against Sentinel Services as hard as he does is the guilt he carries around everywhere. While trying to provide a better life for all Mutants is his main goal, there is also a part of revenge to it for him, as he wants to avenge both his old friend Pulse, and also Sonia, both of whom were killed by Sentinel Services. It makes the fight a personal one, for him, and sometimes shifts his priorities. Rigidity: There are times when John just can’t keep himself from criticizing other people’s choices and decisions. He is a soldier through and through. He lashes out at people a few times; when Marcos goes to see Reed without telling him, when Caitlin and the kids run away, when he learns what Sonia did to Clarice, when Clarice admits past ties to the Brotherhood. Whenever someone does or says something that goes against his own strict set of rules, John is quick to shut it down, sometimes hurtfully. While he is adaptable in combat situations, his morals are very deeply set and he doesn’t like to waver from them.
