character information
name: Makoto Niijima
canon: Persona 5
canon point: December 25th
age: 18

background: Here

abilities: Makoto is a member of the Phantom Thieves, which means she has the ability to enter the Metaverse and use her Persona to fight Shadows. Her Persona is Johanna, who focuses mostly on Nuclear-typed attacks (which do extra damage to those who are burning, frozen or inflicted with shock) with some healing and defensive support skills. She has an inherent resistance to Nuclear attacks and an inherent weakness against Psy attacks.

Because each Persona can only hold up to 8 abilities, the skills Makoto will have available to her are:
● Atomic Flare (Severe Nuclear damage to a single target)
● Mafreidyne (Heavy Nuclear damage to a group)
● Nuke Amp (Passive that boosts Nuclear damage by 50%)
● Nuke Break (Suppresses one target's innate Nuclear resistance for 3 turns)
● Marakukaja (Increased defence for all party members for 3 turns)
● Mediarahan (Full HP restore to all party members)
● Dekunda (Removes all debuffs to all party members' attack/defence/evasion)
● Energy Shower (Any party member affected by Confuse/Fear/Despair/Rage/Brainwash will be cured)

For the purposes of translating turn-based RPG mechanics, "party members" will cover Makoto and up to three others who are on her side/fighting alongside her and are within range; "3 turns" will cover three tag cycles (up until Makoto's third post after casting) and Mediarahan can be considered to heal all injuries provided the target isn't unconscious or worse.

As a Phantom Thief, Makoto is also able to change attire based on people's cognition of her - if she is seen as a threat, she will shift into her "Queen" outfit and this also allows her to make toy guns actually work so long as her target thinks they are real with Makoto's ranged weapon of choice being revolvers. She is also the Thieves' main strategist, being the one responsible for tracking strengths and weaknesses of the various Shadows they fight even after the team's Mission Control character joins the team.

More mundanely, even outside of the Metaverse Makoto is a capable fighter trained in Aikido and she is also an accomplished driver and motorcycle rider.

strengths: Makoto is incredibly hard-working and when she commits to a task, she commits to it fully and to the utmost best of her abilities. She is also a very responsible individual, who owns the tasks she has been assigned and will pursue them relentlessly until she has seen them through. It is these qualities which saw her become Student Council President and is in fact how she came to learn of the Phantom Thieves, since she was tasked with learning their identities shortly after the Kamoshida incident.

Makoto has a strong sense of justice which is what drives most of her development in both the main story and her Confidant arc, where she concludes that she wants to become police commissioner after so long feeling like she had been studying simply because it was expected of her. However, she is also very compassionate and cares deeply for her sister and her friends, just as quick to offer praise where it is due as she is to chastise them when she feels they are not looking after themselves or their future (for example, by not studying as much as they should).

weaknesses: Though her self-confidence grows over the course of the game, Makoto is still somewhat insecure, particularly feeling as though she is overshadowed by her older sister and afraid that she might be a burden to her. She also tends to suppress her emotions, if not to the extent that she once did, which tends to lead to her anger coming out mostly in how she fights in the Metaverse and also leads to her becoming reckless when she feels she needs to prove herself.

Because she has been raised into such a mature mindset and despite her compassion, Makoto can sometimes lack tact when dealing with her peers who act in more typically teenage manners - this forms part of the challenge she faces when trying to convince Eiko of what her "loving boyfriend" was really like as she struggles to understand why Eiko cannot see things as clearly as she does. And her mature mindset does not change that Makoto can be easily frightened when it comes to the dark and/or ghost and horror stories, which is the one time her usual calm demeanour breaks down.
