character information
name: Cassandra Cain
canon: DC Comics (pre-reboot)
canon point: post-Batgirl (2000) #73, before returning to Gotham
age: 19

background: Here.

abilities: Peak human condition, world class martial arts knowledge, stealth tactics, investigation, intuitive understanding of body language and physicality.

strengths:
Cassandra Cain is a headstrong and willful woman hellbent on making herself into someone better. Despite her father's intentions, she learned the value of human life at a young age, and in a way that can't be shaken off. This impulse is what drives her as Batgirl, causing her to despair at failing to save someone and doing all that she possibly could to make sure no one would die on the anniversary of her kill. A poetic, impossible idea? Sure. Cass is idealistic, bordering on naive - shockingly so for someone of her background and especially a favored protégé of the Batman.

She believes in the idea of what Batman means perhaps more than any of his other partners do, actively stating her desire to take over for him one day. When questioned on her loyalties, she directly told Bruce that her loyalty wasn't to him, but foremost to the Bat. Even with the weight and shadow of her past, Cassandra refuses to wallow or play the part of a brooding anti-hero. Not that she doesn't have her moments of that anyway. But ultimately, she's a caring and empathetic girl who likes sitcoms and terrible reality TV. If she can do good, she will, and no one is getting hurt on her watch.

Hand-in-hand with that, she believes in other people and their capacity to change for the better. Some people may be unwilling or too far gone, but if she can change, then surely almost anyone can. She's devoted to the mission and believes in it at least as strongly as her mentor, but she's worlds away from the usual grim idea of the Bat. After all, they're supposed to help and protect people, and stop the people trying to do harm.

weaknesses:
Though she's gotten somewhat better about it, Cassandra can often be reckless, with her first instinct in many cases being to handle something alone. She's impatient, and often dismissive of things she can't get the hang of quickly. After all, her main skills have always been the most natural thing in the world to her.

Her skill with reading people makes her prone to snap judgments of others, deciding if a person is worth her time or not with little more than a glance.

Her past also gives her a lack of self-regard that at times has gone as far as an outright death wish - she once rushed a gunner and took a spray of bullets to protect someone, with no fear. When she lost her ability to read movement, she agreed to a deathmatch with Lady Shiva after a year in return for being retaught the skill, deciding - with very little hesitation - that she'd rather be "perfect for a year" than "mediocre for a lifetime". She's too self-assured, over-relying on her body reading to the point that it's her entire defense in combat.

Furthermore, Cass is hobbled in day-to-day life by her illiteracy and lack of social graces. She's awkward at times, due in large part to her isolated background and understanding of body language; Cass is acutely aware of what someone is feeling when they're looking at her, making her prone to self-consciousness at times.

job skills (optional): She won't be seeking a job, initially.
housing (optional): stick her with other bats, preferably
