↪ After talking to other PCs in Eluvio, Yuuri learned about other worlds/universes, and he learned to be more compassionate after learning how horrible some character's lives were (Star Wars: Rogue One and Voltron are examples) compared to his. Hearing about the struggles his new friends went through allowed him to realize just how sheltered a life he had led before arriving in Eluvio.
↪ After being told he would never see his friends and family from home again, Yuuri realized that he'd taken too long to appreciate them. After that, he put a lot more effort into being more social and tried to reach out to others more.
↪ Yuuri and Viktor had a few misunderstandings about their relationship in game, and as a result learned to actually start communicating with each other instead of assuming they were on the same page on important decisions.
↪ After hearing that the Captain and his crew might be withholding important information from the PCs, Yuuri learned to be more careful about when/where to share information. The situation also left him feeling helpless and frustrated enough to become more proactive about trying to gather information through talking/questioning the NPCs.
↪ Yuuri volunteered for a mission to the first planet they passed, thinking it would be relatively easy and safe. He and his teammates were able to connect with the Fek, who were part of the mission, and left the planet with a better understanding of Oros and its natives. Because of that, Yuuri felt compelled to help with the evacuation efforts when he heard that Oros was being bombed to nuclear winter.
↪ He and his teammates were later named liaisons to the survivors of the same native group after the evacuations. While helping the Fek transition into life on the Eluvio, Yuuri and his teammates were able to pick up some diplomacy skills.
↪ After a mysterious killer brutally murdered a few characters on the ship, and also while remembering how unprepared for the Oros mission he was, Yuuri decided to start learning self defense for his own safety.
● abilities: Figure Skating: He's a professional figure skater who competes at the international level.
Fitness/Athleticism: Being a world-class athlete means that his fitness level is way up there. While he doesn't have combat experience, the kind of training regime he puts himself through means he can probably keep up for the most part when it comes to speed or stamina.
Dance: He has some proficiency in picking up different dance styles. He's most familiar with ballet, but has been shown doing some ballroom dancing, break dancing, and also pole dancing.
Languages: Seems to enjoy learning different languages! He's fluent in Japanese and English, and has also been shown saying phrases in Thai and Russian.
● strengths: Drive: As soon as Viktor comes into the picture, Yuuri's drive and determination become increasingly obvious. Instead of letting the fact that he's fallen out of top shape get to him, Yuuri throws himself into training so that he can learn from Viktor to the best of his abilities. He's shown pushing himself to the limit, practicing hours and hours without complaint, and continuing to train even when his feet are bruised and beat up.
Fortitude: Despite the struggles his "mental weakness", as he calls it, puts him through, Yuuri's willingness to continue fighting through it shows a great strength of character on his part. Though Yuuri suffered really humiliating losses in both the Grand Prix Finals and the Japanese Nationals, he tries to pick himself up when he gets back to his hometown in Japan. He also shows this strength when he tells Yuuko that he kept skating because he didn't want to feel so down anymore. In the end, Yuuri doesn't let his "mental weakness" keep him from his love of skating or from giving the sport his all.
Willingness to change: Lack of self-esteem aside, Yuuri shows a willingness to listen to criticism and strive to improve himself for the better. He takes Viktor's criticism at a competition well, quickly correcting his attitude toward fellow competitors even in the same day. He also shows a sense of awareness in the speech he gives in Episode 5, clearly stating that he's become stronger because he can finally see the love around him now. Even without prompting, Yuuri has the ability to reflect on his own actions and come to the conclusion that he can do and be better, and that he'll certainly try his best to get there.
● weaknesses: Sensitivity: "Glass Heart" is one of the phrases Yuuri's official profile uses to describe him, and it's definitely fitting. Yuuri feels his emotions very deeply. While his ability to feel lends itself to his artistry in skating routines, it also means that more often than not, Yuuri can get overwhelmed by strong emotions. Negative emotions, in particular tend to get the better of him, making him freeze up and get caught up in his own thoughts.
Low self esteem: He often describes himself as a "dime a dozen" skater in the introductions, but this clearly isn't the case when other characters mention his status as Japan's top male skater. This disparity between what Yuuri says about himself and what others says about him could not make his lack of confidence more obvious. Not to mention, Yuuri seems confused when anyone looks up to him, as if he doesn't think he has any reason to be respected.
Emotional Distance: Yuuri refers to his anxiety as a mental weakness, and because he tends to close himself off when he feels vulnerable, he can sometimes come across as cold or unfriendly. Withdrawn as he can be, it can often be difficult for Yuuri to open up to people and make close friendships. Even for Viktor, someone Yuuri idolized, it took some time to draw Yuuri out of his shell for a much needed heart-to-heart.
