abilities:

Within the world of Fullmetal Alchemist, there is only one power that individuals might be bestowed with (unless they're a homunculus and that's a whole 'nother ball of wax). This ability is called (obviously) alchemy and should an individual be capable of it, they're able to perform transmutations. Known as the science of understanding a composition, deconstructing it, and reconstructing it, alchemy can be preformed by many and to the outsider, this power seems like the ability to simply change items at will. However this is far from the truth. Alchemy follows a distinct set of laws, the foremost being The Law of Equivalent Exchange. By ignoring these rules, disastrous things can happen to the alchemist. But by following them, alchemy can be used to create many items of benefit and use.

Three things are typically needed for an alchemist to preform alchemy: a transmutation circle, the energy and talent, and the appropriate amount of material to transmute. The first can vary anywhere from a simple
circles with a square or triangles drawn inside to elaborate symbols of intricate design. These arrays, know as transmutation circles, act as a conduit for an alchemist to harness and use energy that powers their transmutations. The circle represents the circulation of power and when an alchemist adds a construction equation (or the writing, symbols, and squares/triangles within a transmutation circle), the power is able to manifest. But even with a transmutation circle, not everyone can preform alchemy. It is often a talent born within individuals and unique to them. What's more, should someone be capable of preforming alchemy, they must study hard in order to reach certain levels. A knowledge of the elements, as well as common molecules and chemicals are necessary for an alchemist to be talented. Finally, alchemy follows the Law of Equivalent Exchange. Much like the law of conservation of mass, the Law of Equivalent Exchange states that something cannot be created from nothing. An alchemist must first present material of equal mass to that which they want to obtain. To be more specific, only items with like atoms can be transmuted; all elements must be kept intact. As long as an alchemist keeps all this in mind, they might be able to preform transmutations of all sorts, such as turning carbon coal into diamonds. Then again, some don't have as much talent as Alphonse Elric.

Due to his and his brother's failed attempt at reviving their mother with the use of alchemy, Alphonse came in contact with The Gate of Truth. This massive door, which resides within every alchemist, is what the energy of alchemy flows through. If an alchemist comes in direct contact with it and lives (a very rare occurrence considering that aside from Al, only three other people have managed it, including his famous older brother, Edward), they are then able to preform alchemy without transmutation circles. So rare is this ability that Al's older brother is famous for it. Those that can use alchemy without transmutation circles do so by clapping their hands and when their palms connect, their body forms a ring. This is the transmutation circle they uses. However, Alphonse doesn't become aware of his ability to preform alchemy in this manner until a point in time that ensures that any alchemy Al may perform could potentially destroy the body within which his soul resides.

Of course, before Al remembers his confrontation with the Gate (after the tragic death of Martel, the chimera woman whom Pride murdered while she was hiding inside Al's armor), Al still has an edge of most skilled alchemists. Even if an alchemist can transmute without arrays, they must still have direct contact with the material they are transmuting. Al, on the other hand, needs only to be within a close proximity, as seen in the very first episode when Al stands above the transmutation circle he is activating, rather than placing his hands on it as would normally be required.

Eventually, once Al is restored to a physical body, rather than the suit of armor he was bound to for four years, Al loses all memory of having seen the Gate and thus the ability to transmute without arrays. In the film, Conqueror of Shamballa, Al makes up for this by wearing a set of white gloves with arrays stitched into the palms. This allows Al to complete quick and swift transmutations without having to draw arrays first. When Al encounters the Gate for last time in the film, it can be assumed he regains his ability to transmute without the need of arrays or gloves, but due to his being trapped in Munich, alchemy is completely impossible.

Even taking away his gloves or ability to transmute without circles, Al is still a very formidable alchemist. His transmutations are impressive even to famous and intelligent State Alchemists such as Alex Louis Armstrong, because Al's training, even over the short period of time he spent with Izumi during the two year time-skip, has taught him how to pull off such transmutations as creating full tornadoes with the power to pick up many heavy suits of armor. Al also has a very unique ability, one that no other alchemist in his world has been able to do. Thanks to the time he'd spent as a soul bound to a suit of armor, Alphonse can use alchemy to place portions of his soul into suits of armor. These transmutations are temporary, but they allow him to control these suits of armor over great distances, even across worlds.

strengths:

One of the first things remembered about Alphonse Elric is how kind he is. He is very selfless and willing to reach out to others, as well as to make friends. Often times, this kindness comes off as naivety, though Alphonse is in no way ignorant to how the world works. Due to both his teacher's lessons, his mother's love, and his own view of the world, Alphonse is the type of person that would rather throw himself in line to save others rather than to keep himself safe. He often extends a hand of friendship to strangers and enemies, even going so far to being polite to both. Alphonse is also very empathetic. While his brother will more quickly judge others or ignore the reasons for why someone makes cruel or unkind choices, Alphonse is more willing to find out why the person might be fighting. Besides this, Alphonse is also extremely patient. Within the anime series, Al is a lot more subdued and calmer than his brother, less likely to fly into a rage over things like height (as Edward would) or insults. He thinks before he acts, taking more time to respond to things around him, even if he has a mind as quick and intelligent as his brother.

weaknesses:

Al's biggest weakness are his emotions, especially with regards to his brother. He occasionally allows them to get the best of him, despite spending much of his youth as a suit of armor incapable of expressing emotion. He is extremely protective of his brother, to the point of being once willing to rip off the limbs of a homunculus in order to restore them to Ed. There are times when Al can be self conscious about his status as a soul bound to suit of armor ("I didn't ask to be this big!"), though they are less frequent than Ed's reactions to being called short, and this shifts to being self conscious of his appearance, leading him to taking up his brother's attire. And though not as bad as Ed, Al is a definite risk taker, willing to throw himself in harm's way, especially if it's to protect the innocent.

job skills (optional): Alchemist (ie, can repair broken items/research science/etc), fighter (Al is skilled with many types of fighting styles and can make his own weapons)
housing (optional): Preferably on the same floor/room as Ed.
