She was on her own for a long time and knows that she can't count on anyone but herself, and is very independent. Thankfully, with her family and friends, she has opened up and shown a willingness to lean on them. She is supportive of them too, and early on in her time in Storybrooke, volunteered to help strangers for no reason other than it being the right thing to do. Her difficult start in life doesn't keep her from wanting to be a good person.
Emma stands up for people who can't stand up for themselves. In her town, she's called "the savior" because of a prophecy. The responsibility attached to that title is something that Emma clearly takes to heart; she looks to protect others, even when it puts her in danger, and wants to be the hero that she sees in both of her parents. She is someone who others can count on, and who uses support system she has now to strengthen her.
She's also a good friend, someone who wouldn't betray a friend's confidence, and a good mother, though she makes the same human mistakes that all mothers do. She worries about being good enough for her son, Henry, and would never want to fail him. In times when she has let him down, Emma owned those mistakes and promised to do better.
For the people she loves, Emma would literally go to hell and back. She doesn't take the life she has now for granted, she keeps fighting for it.
