riverview: exploration
Exploration is an important part of the culture of Riverview Quarantine. With a population mostly comprised of pioneers and people seeking a new lease on life, there is definitely a big interest in branching out and rediscovering lost parts of the city or scouting out new places to expand to. Anyone is welcome to explore at any time, and to request a member of the Perimeter Guard to accompany them on the exploratory mission if they do not have a capable fighter on the team to protect the explorers.
At any given time, there will be several things going on either in the abandoned part of the city or outside the city walls that require investigation. Current missions can be found in the comments below.
● Each mission has a cause, an objective, and may have requirements for how many characters and what skillsets are needed to complete the task.
● Once you have chosen a mission you would like your character to complete, leave a comment on the mission to let the mod and other players know that the mission is in progress.
● Arrange your team, plan the mission, and thread it out.
● Once you have threaded at least to the point of reaching the objective, link the thread and give a quick summary of the mission outcome in a second comment and the mod will consider the mission complete. Each completed mission will be replaced with a new active mission.
● Each mission has many possible outcomes. Which outcome happens is completely up to the players involved. The only real limit is if you would like a mission to have a catastrophic outcome that would drastically affect the functioning of the game, in which case, please contact the mod first.
● All participants in the mission will receive the applicable Activity Point bonuses for the mission once they have submitted it to the Activity Bonus Rewards page.
Players are more than welcome to suggest or outline a mission of their own creation, for their own use or for others. Just fill out the info in the text box, post it in a reply to this entry and the mod will approve it or, if necessary, tweak it a little. Once approved, all of the above points can be followed as usual.
Mission: Fertile Ground
● Objective: Bring soil and vegetation samples back from the area in question and submit them to the Agricultural Authority
● Dangers: Fertile soil may mean there are already a number of plants flourishing in this area, resulting in not only a higher number of herbivores present but also the dangerous carnivores that prey upon them.
● Requirements: One character to take a quick class on how to properly collect the samples; at least two Perimeter Guard or characters who are skilled fighters for protection.

Mission complete
Summary: Our intrepid team shows up at the location. Just as Ronan finishes collecting the samples (which he can tell are going to make great plants), they're attacked by giant wild alien-hogs. They get their butts kicked. Ronan accidentally brings back a dream creature that also gets its butt kicked. They get in the truck and high tail it back, defeated but with their sample. (So not worth it.)

Mission: Civilization in the Lost Ravine
● Objective: To contact the small civilization, determine why their numbers are dwindling, and bring them back to the city.
● Dangers: Besides the usual danger of monsters and predators in the forest and other environmental dangers, there are concerns that the group may be hostile or carrying an infectious disease. Additionally, the small settlement is in a deep ravine, so there is also rough terrain to factor in.
● Requirements: At least two or three Perimeter Guards or characters who are skilled fighters for protection. Two characters who can drive trucks through the rough terrain to transport any people back to the city (can be the same characters that are along for protection doing double duty). A character with a medical background would be helpful, but the City Administration is also willing to put a member of the team through a course on how to test for communicable illnesses.

He'd be good for communicating with the civilization, being an extra hand, meat shield and immune to disease. Nice for first contact!

Mission: Brownout
● Objective: To travel to the southern stretch of the outer fence, find the source of the problem, and fix it to restore fence function.
● Dangers: Since the fence has been glitching off and on for close to two and a half weeks, monster and predator population will likely be higher in the area.
● Requirements: One tech-savvy character to take a day-long course on basic function of the laser fences. At least three Perimeter Guard members or characters who are skilled fighters for protection.

Mission: Behemoth in the Northwest
● Objective: To find and observe the creature, ascertain if it is aggressive, predatory, or a danger to the city, and report back. This is a stealth mission, intended to be in-and-out. If the creature is deemed dangerous, an assault mission will be added in future.
● Dangers: The usual environmental dangers, monsters...and possibly getting stepped on!
● Requirements: One character who has experience with animals in any capacity, or who has an interest in animals and would be willing to take a one-day course on animal behaviors. At least one Perimeter Guard member or a character who is a skilled fighter for protection.

Mission: Healing Spring
● Objective: To find the spring and take a sample of the water, as well as surrounding soil, rocks, and vegetation, as well as investigating the spring on scientific, magical, and technological levels.
● Dangers: The jungle is extremely dangerous. There are the usual monsters, as well as sightings of a terrible behemoth wandering the woods. Additionally, because of how far out this spring is rumored to be, the lack of concrete directions, and the size of team required, it will be a long, dangerous undertaking.
● Requirements: One or more characters with scientific knowledge (geology, biochemistry, anything like that), one or more characters with magical or spiritual skills or knowledge of some variety; optionally an herbalist or other similar expert. At least three to four members of the Perimeter Guard or characters who are skilled fighters for protection. Optionally, characters to help carry supplies or drive vehicles.

Mission: Carnivorous Harvest
● Objective: To travel into the jungle to gather a quantity of Lababerries and bring them back to the city.
● Dangers: While the Lababerries are still in season, they are normally gathered early in the spring, before the plants they grow on come out of hibernation. This is because the plants they grow on are highly carnivorous. Watch out for hungry leaves!
● Requirements: Several characters to collect fruit, a vehicle or other transport to carry fruit back; at least one or two Perimeter Guard or characters who are skilled fighters for protection. Optional, but helpful would be someone with knowledge of or skill with plants.

Mission: Lost Research
● Objective: To follow the expedition into the Abandoned City, find out what happened to the team (if they have been killed, gotten lost, gone rogue, etc.), rescue survivors if there are any, and recover whatever research has been completed.
● Dangers: The expedition was last heard from in the Delta under the waterfalls, which is several days' travel by land. There are a lot of monsters and there may be other dangers from glitching leftover technology in the area.
● Requirements: One or more characters with scientific knowledge (computer and technology related), one or more characters with medical skills. Optional, but helpful would be any character with experience with climbing, rafting, or otherwise navigating rough terrain. At least three to four members of the Perimeter Guard or characters who are skilled fighters for protection. Optionally, characters to help carry supplies or drive vehicles.

Mission: Waking the Dead
● Objective: To find out what happened to the people in the commune, deduce if there was a crime, a new type of monster, a poison, or something else entirely.
● Dangers: While the one type of death that has been ruled out is communicable illness, the defenses in the commune are still intact, which may mean booby traps. The particular situation has also attracted a large amount of small scavengers trying to get into the area.
● Requirements: One or more characters with investigative experience, who either know how to take evidence samples, or are willing to take a short course to learn how. One or more characters with magical abilities, particularly related to necromancy or communion with the dead. One or two members of the Perimeter Guard or characters who are skilled fighters for protection.

EDIT: got a team together, plotting in progress.
Re: Mission: Waking the Dead
Mission: How to Train Your...
● Objective: To track down one or more of these creatures and spend some time with it, figure out if it is trainable as a pet or steed, and bring news (and just maybe a new friend?) back to the city. The type of creature is entirely up to whoever accepts the mission.
● Dangers: Due to the nature of taming and training an animal, the party may need to spend a decent amount of time outside city walls, which means dealing with living in the wild with all its associated dangers for some time.
● Requirements: One or more characters who are good with animals, have training with them, or have animal-related abilities; one or more members of the Perimeter Guard or characters who are skilled fighters for protection. Optionally, characters to help carry supplies or drive vehicles.

Mission: Petcetera
● Objective: To capture at least a few breeding pairs of these creatures for the pet shops. The type of creature is entirely up to whoever accepts the mission.
● Dangers: Characters who embark on this mission will discover that the only reason this creature makes a good pet for the little girl in the show is that her father can telepathically control animals! In the wild, the creatures are nasty and dangerous. Whether or not they can be tamed to make decent pets is up for debate.
● Requirements: One or more characters who are good with animals, have training with them, or have animal-related abilities; one or more members of the Perimeter Guard or characters who are skilled fighters for protection.
● NOTE: This mission is available for multiple teams. Please be sure to plan between teams so the animal and outcome are the same across all teams.

Mission: Pride of Pestilence (submission)
● Objective: To contain the creatures, and either eliminate, or capture and rehabilitate the creatures to a safer locale. They may also prove useful in other regards, provided one has the skills necessary.
● Dangers: These oversized cat-like hybrids are extremely powerful and fast. They also seem to possess slightly above average intelligence, and are wary and defensive over what they consider their 'territory.'
● Requirements: A minimum of three Perimeter Guards or characters who are skilled fighters; one optional scientifically minded individual to observe and record this new species' habits; one optional character who is good with animals.
● NOTE:
Please forgive Dee's poor art skills.Females of this lion/hyena/bull hybrid do not possess manes, and instead have a mohawk, and larger fangs. They are the primary hunters in their pride, similar to regular lions. Females are also larger than males, though males are far more territorial and violent. Unlike lions, there are usually more than one male present.APPROVED
Mission: Lost Children (submission)
● Objective: To locate the source of the music, as well as to discover where the lost children have been taken. And, if possible, recover them safely.
● Dangers: There is a bird-like creature whose song hypnotizes and resonates with those younger than seventeen. Any below this age are subject to the animal's song. This creature is also extremely territorial to those immune to it's song, and will defend itself by any means available to it. Additionally, the jungle itself is often a danger.
● Requirements: At least three members of Search and Rescue; at most, an additional one to two skilled volunteers familiar with first aid or self defense, able to carry supplies.

Follow-Up Mission: Fertile Ground
● Objective: To survey the area and ascertain how best to expand into it. This is a stealth mission, intended to avoid confrontation with the resident monsters as much as possible, but to find out where they live, breed, and more information about them. The goal is to figure out whether to exterminate or relocate the creatures.
● Dangers: The giant alien-hogs are the most prominent danger in this case, particularly as they have recently been aggravated by the first team, but there may be other monsters in the area.
● Requirements: One character who has experience with animals in any capacity, or who has an interest in animals and would be willing to take a one-day course on animal behaviors. At least two Perimeter Guard members or a character who is a skilled fighter for protection.

I think it dovetails nicely into his ultimate job goal (Monster Advisor) and he also fills the requirement of experience with animals/behavior.

Mission: Mystery Transmission
● Objective: To follow the signal to its source with specialized equipment and find out whether it is a distress signal, an important piece of abandoned technology, or something else entirely.
● Dangers: Besides the usual environmental dangers of traveling for several days by land into the Abandoned City, including monsters and other dangers, there is heavy speculation that whatever is sending the signal is super haunted. Additionally, some caving may be required to reach the signal source.
● Requirements: One or more characters with scientific knowledge (computer and technology related), one or more characters with medical skills, one or more characters with spiritual or magical ability in case of haunting. Optional, but helpful would be any character with experience with climbing, rafting, or otherwise navigating rough terrain. At least three to four members of the Perimeter Guard or characters who are skilled fighters for protection. Optionally, characters to help carry supplies or drive vehicles.

Mission: Butterfly Effect
Objective: Send the chalice back through the portal, this can be done with magic, science, or a combination of the two.
Dangers: Don’t actually touch the chalice that would be real bad; OOCly this isn't going to happen, but characters would be warned ICly
Requirements: Anyone with arcane or scientific knowledge
Notes: This can be undertaken by multiple teams, if there are a number of sign ups, the successful team will be chosen by RNG and notified! Taako is essentially a ‘resource’ in this plot, just let me know when you sign up if the team would want to talk with him about the chalice.

Mission: Don't Wake the Deity
● Objective: Desecration. The temple hosting the awakening deity has to be identified out of the host of abandoned ones and then burned/broken/destroyed so that the sleeping god/dess/deity never wakens or is actually killed.
● Dangers: The dangers of having to wade through the wilds and find the right temple. Temple Guards: There will be guards, traps, and security defenses of some type around the temple to protect the being in question. The longer the quest goes untaken after the more sensitive beings in the city notice it, the more the god will wake and the more likely it will affect more than those who are just sensitive. So the ultimate danger will be the god waking and coming to demand worship itself.
● Requirements: People willing to go out and destroy a temple and send the being back to sleep (or kill it if it fully awakens). Fighters/perimeter guards, possibly a doctor in case of injuries. Characters who might have experience fighting deities. The more sensitive someone is to divine powers, the more they'll be affected by this.
● Notes: Can easily be taken by more than one party. This mission would kick off with a feeling of unease, of being watched, and for those more sensitive, of dreams/nightmares beckoning them to worship (X DEITY). The mission could also go sideways by the being getting PC worshipers to defend it and let it wake, meaning there would be some random deity on the moon that might further intrude with the citizens of Quarantine.

I am going to include this on June's Test Drive Meme as an exploration prompt. Anyone who completes this mission on the TDM can submit the thread as a completion, so long as all involved parties are apped and accepted into the game.

Mission: Clear the Beach!
● Objective: Adventurers to clear a path between civilization and the beach. It will take about a week, but the reward is having the beach all to yourself for a weekend before heading back and having the place crowded with seasonal tourists!
● Dangers: Monsters, unsteady structures in need of repair
● Requirements: Combatants, mainly... but a surveyor would be wise to bring along to enable the follow-on mission!
(note: I think this might be a good repeatable mission for people who want a beach episode now and again until this area becomes 'civilized')

Mission: Clear the Beach! Part Deux
● Objective: Sweep the area of debris and foliage, salvage any useful material and repair common use areas as well as potential commercial zones for vendors and venue use.
● Dangers: It's mostly safe, but accidents do happen! Wear your hardhats, folks! SAFETY FIRST!
● Requirements: Surveyors, salvage, repair crews!

Mission: Keys to the Past
● Cause: Eventually characters are going to realize that what was causing this glitch in the memory system is the mechanics in charge of canon-memory updates. The machinery goes haywire, the nanobots start infecting people/their devices, and instead of characters getting their canon updated memories they experience memories of others. During this period a canon update would not be possible, as the machine is down until a solution is put together and implemented.
● Objective: Fix the glitch causing the nanobots to mess with the wrong memories
● Dangers: The mechanism never gets fixed, making it impossible for characters to canon update ever again. Memory sharing could go on indefinitely and become a part of character's subconscious, permanently connecting them to those they've shared these visions with.
● Requirements: Characters with the scientific or magical means to fix the glitch in the machinery. Once the glitch is resolved the nanobots will resume regular function as if nothing was ever amiss. Since no one knows what exactly caused it in the first place there is no way to tell what solution is best to approach with. (As in this can be fixed with tech or magic, depending on who is interested and signs up.)
