riverview: applications

applications: open

Applications will be open from 10:00 PM EST on the 1st of every month until 10:00 PM on the 7th of every month. They will be processed as quickly as possible after they are submitted; if you have not received a response by the 10th of the month, feel free to contact the mod.

Applications will be open from October 1st until December 7th, and will be processed on a first-come first-served basis.

● Please post the entirety of your application in a comment to this entry.

Applications may receive a verdict of Approved, Declined, or Revisions.

Declined applications can be reworked and resubmitted during the next application cycle. If an application is declined 3 times, it cannot be resubmitted.
Revisions must be submitted within 48 hours of the revision request being sent out. If this is impossible due to extenuating circumstances, please contact the mod.

● There are currently 58 Character Slots still available in the game.

● While the game is close to character cap, reserved applications will be processed before unreserved applications, with unreserved applications being processed at the end of the cycle until cap is reached.

Application Queue: All applications that would put the game over character cap will be placed in the queue below and processed on a first-come-first-serve basis. Applications in queue will be processed as drops happen, regardless of whether the application cycle is complete.

● Casts at or close to Cast Cap: Marvel Cinematic Universe: 15/15; Marvel Comics: 12/15

application guide

● Accepted character types: fandom, original, canon AU
● Non-accepted character types: fandom OC, AU
● The character limit is 2, with 2 apps allowed per month; players can buy up to a maximum of 4 character slots with AC bonus points. There is a cast cap of 15 characters per cast at this time.
● Linked samples should be no older than 1 year.
● Application challenges are not allowed at this time, but if you would like to apply for a character that is on reserve, please submit the application with "not reserved" noted in the subject line, and your application will be considered if the reserved application is declined or not turned in.

CLARIFICATION ADDED 04/02/2017: Applications must fit in ONE COMMENT on the application page. In special situations such as original characters or canon characters without an information link, please try to keep the summary concise and stick to major turning points. If you have been as concise as possible and it absolutely will not fit in one comment, please store the background section in an entry on your journal/musebox/website and link it to keep the application within one comment.

CLARIFICATION ADDED 02/03/2018: The Strengths and Weaknesses sections are a stand-in for the usual personality section and should relate to the character's personality strengths and weaknesses. These sections should not include anything related to abilities and the weaknesses should not be 'positives in disguise' (for example, stating that a character has a weakness to iron because they are a fairy would not be an acceptable response to the weaknesses section, nor would stating that a character is too generous). Every character has good and bad personality traits, please include both.

CLARIFICATION ADDED 03/10/2018: Linked samples must be from a publicly available source. Friends-locked samples are not acceptable for use (via screencaps or other methods), unless they have been unlocked and made public.

● A mod-created sample application can be found here. This is an example of a canon application. The strengths section has been filled out in bullet point form, and the weaknesses have been filled out in paragraph form - both options or a combination thereof are acceptable.

Sample Applications: Ronan Lynch (Canon Character; Written Background), Yuuri Katsuki (Canon Character; CRAU), Derek Hale (Canon Character; CRAU), Tolemi Pagoda (Original Character), Benjamin Holt (Original Character)

weaknesses: list at least 3 personality weaknesses your character has and elaborate on them; this section should not be more than 300 words

job skills (optional): if you would like your character to be placed in a job to start out, list three work-related skills so they can be assigned something suitable; this is different than the abilities section, and should only be three words or very short phrases - the character will not be placed in a job if there are no traits listed here; This is something that is asked in orientation, and would be volunteered by your character. But please feel free to specify if they have a skill they might not mention but that you would like considered in their job placement and I'll take it into consideration as a "funny coincidence."

network sample: write out or link to an example of how your character would communicate over the network; this sample does not have to be long, but it must clearly show your character's personality and a good understanding of their voice; links can be from the test drive meme, other games, PSLs (as long as they are not AU), or memes - but should not break the fourth wall (Dear Player etc.)

prose/action sample: write out or link to an example of how you write your character in interactions; this sample should be a bit longer and can be done in prose or action bracket style and can be set in the game or your character's canon, though please avoid over-use of NPCing other characters - this is about your character; links can be from the test drive meme, other games, PSLs (as long as they are not AU), or memes - but should not break the fourth wall (Dear Player etc.)

submit an application

Please fill out the information in the form below and submit it in its entirety in one comment to this entry. If your application doesn't fit in one comment, it needs to be trimmed - application standards are weighted to quality rather than quantity.

Jon Snow ✥ Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire

player information
name: Elizabeth
age: Over 30
contact: PM to character journal, plurk: detectivefiction, discord: detectivefiction#1669
other characters: None!

character information
name: Jon Snow
canon: Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire
canon point: End of 7x07 (current)
age: ~23ish (canon isn't clear)

(canon) background:

Jon Snow at the Game of Thrones Wiki.
Jon Snow at the Wiki of Ice and Fire.
Bastardy in Westeros: Necessary information for a full understanding of this character.
I'm playing Show Jon, but Book Jon is pretty much the same character with a few small differences that have to do with certain other characters and events being simplified/cut/combined during the adaptation process, and with Jon himself being aged up several years in the show in comparison to the books. He wasn't much of a talker for the first few seasons, so I've used the books for valuable insight into his motivations, childhood memories, and inner life up through the end of S5 (where the show continues past the most recent book events). The actor playing him has done the same.

It's safe to assume that Show Jon has Book Jon's background and internal monologue except in the cases where they conflict with show-only events: e.g., Book Jon doesn't deal with the mutineers or go to Hardhome in person, and Show Jon doesn't swap Dalla's baby with Gilly's or have an attraction to Val, because Val and Dalla are relatively minor characters who were written out of the show. Book purists tend to think this means that Book Jon is more "ruthless and pragmatic" than Show Jon, but Show Jon also executes a show-only mutineer who's a child in his early teens, so I'd call it about even.

abilities:

❄ Excellent swordsman
❄ Skills with other medieval weapons (lance/spear, arrows, daggers, shields, etc.)
❄ Teaching medieval fighting techniques and strategy
❄ Horseback riding
❄ Strong swimmer
❄ Hunting
❄ Ranging
❄ Some stealth (within reason; he's not Solid Snake)
❄ Knowledge of battle strategy
❄ Knowledge of castle defense
❄ Administration/Command
❄ Diplomacy
❄ Well-educated for his time/place
Lovely penmanship
❄ Strength (including rare bursts of unusual strength/ferocity when agitated; this latter aspect is somewhat downplayed in the show and may or may not be supernatural. Some characters suspect him of being the reincarnation of a legendary hero, but whether or not he actually is, and what that would mean, is still up in the air.)
Semi-prophetic dreams about his own world/future, and dreams from the POV of his direwolf, Ghost
(Note: The dreams are a book-only thing, but that's primarily because the creators/producers of the show feel that dream sequences and flashbacks are awkward storytelling devices in film, so they omitted every one that wasn't central to the plot. Since the dreams don't really confer any in-game advantages and are mostly just a character note, and since they may come up in dream plots in RP and there's no reason to assume that the show version hasn't had them offscreen, I'd like to keep them as a thing he's experienced. There's at least one more dream than is listed at that link, and it involves protecting the Wall in armor made of black ice while wielding a red sword.

Also, if Ghost is able to join Jon as an activity reward at some future point, we might need to discuss then whether or not the related wolf dreams of doing wolf things can continue in this setting. Jon "feels connected" to Ghost in both the books and the show, but it's less explicit in the show.)

strengths:
Genuinely Good Person: Jon is an ethical, honorable man of good character and moral integrity. He's humble, kind, brave, selfless, resolute, fair, thoughtful, empathetic, and genuine, by both nature (in many ways, he combines the better qualities of his birth parents) and nurture (he wants to live up to Ned Stark's example). He loves his family, wins friends and followers easily, and is protective of those who need it. His current goal is nothing less than saving mankind, even if it means sacrificing himself.

Perceptive: Because noble bastards in Westeros have to be unusually careful to avoid committing social faux pas, Jon is observant, and has learned to analyze people's personalities and interactions. He notices things other people don't, has a correct take on the personalities of most other major characters he comes into contact with, and is often good at understanding the politics of a given situation. He's not infallible, but he pays attention, and other characters remark on how sharp he is over and above his intelligence and education.

Stoic: Jon will tolerate a lot without complaining, whether it's spending a long time in harsh conditions, physically hard work, bad food and beverage… you name it, and he bears it with easy, self-deprecating humor. While he goes through a brief phase early on where he's snobbish towards his fellow Night's Watch recruits, once he gets over himself and fully commits to the Watch, he doesn't seem to think there's anything he's "too good" to do. Even if he thinks it's hard, he does what needs to be done.

weaknesses:
Temper/Violence: While Jon is probably the closest thing his canon currently has to a moral hero, growing up dealing with the stigma and marginalization of being a bastard has made him sensitive to slights. His defensiveness has decreased with maturity and success, but he still has a temper and can still be provoked to violence. In 6x09, Jon is depicted as progressively (albeit temporarily) losing most of his humanity through the course of the Battle of the Bastards, during which he kills at least 19 men and almost beats another to death; the battle itself was about protecting his family and their honor and retaking their home. In 7x02, Littlefinger provokes Jon over Jon's difficult childhood and Littlefinger's obsession with Sansa, and Jon nearly strangles him.

Goes His Own Way: Jon seeks information from other characters when he thinks he needs it, but he's independent in decision-making and tends to ignore his advisors, and some of his decisions are unpopular. It prompted his murder when he was Lord Commander, and later, it frustrates some of his allies (Sansa laments that he neither listens to her nor keeps her informed). This ties into the third weakness, which usually involves doing something his putative advisors or allies disagree with.

Sometimes Stupidly Brave and Honorable: These are admirable traits until they nearly get you killed, as during the wight hunt in 7x06, when Jon guarded Drogon's flank against oncoming wights so that the rest of his party could escape, nearly died several times, and had to be rescued by a deus ex machina, or during the Dragonpit meeting in 7x07, when he risked sabotaging his side's entire plan (and his own goal to save humanity) because he refused to lie to Cersei about his allegiance to Daenerys.

job skills (optional):

❄ soldiering/guarding/fighting/hunting/ranging-type skills
(let's face it, he spent several formative years guarding a border wall)
❄ teaching the above skills
❄ administrative skills
brooding

housing (optional):

Shared housing with Daenerys. They're pretty much a committed couple at this point, or seemed like they were about to be when they were last seen at their respective canon points, so assuming they both get in, they'd want to be close to each other.

network username: j.snow

network sample:

A network thread with Wonder Woman on another game's TDM.
If you need more, try here. [This one is with a Daenerys: I wanted to give you a little more character variety in samples, but I haven't done a lot of network threads with him yet. The continuation link goes to a log which could also function as a secondary log sample.]

prose/action sample:

[OOC: This is an amalgamation and slight rewrite of several consecutive tags from a PSL in which Jon has learned of his true identity and isn't quite sure yet what to do about it. At this point, he draws a comparison to another difficult situation and thinks about its outcome. Most of the omitted responses were just confirmations that she was still listening.]
"I want to tell you a story," he says to Daenerys. "I'm not sure whether you'll understand why I'm telling it."

He's watched the pained expressions flickering over her face and finally settling into something inscrutable. They tug at him. He wants to kiss her again, and doesn't, still unsure of whether or not he should, but he thumbs softly at her lip with the hand that rests against her face.

"I joined the Night's Watch when I was very young -- maybe a little too young. You go to the Wall and you train for a while and then you take your vows. Loyalty to the Watch, no wife, no children; it's a vow to be chaste and only death or the King can end it."

This admission in itself will probably lead to further questions when his story is done, but it won't be the only thing that does. He hasn't spoken of much of this before to anyone. There are some who know scattered bits of it, but few who know the whole tale, the how and the why.

"All I wanted was to be a ranger, because my uncle Benjen was a ranger, but the Old Bear -- Lord Commander Mormont -- wanted me for his steward.

"Still, rangers were disappearing, my uncle disappeared, and we found some bodies that came alive in the night, and whole villages of Wildlings were on the move. The Old Bear decided to do a Great Ranging... took three hundred men out into Wildling territory north of the Wall to try to find out what was happening.

"When we were out there, we met with a ranger from the Watch called the Halfhand, and I was given leave to join his party to look for Wildling scouts. We found and questioned one, and I was meant to kill her, but she was a girl. I couldn't. I was still just seventeen; I'd never killed anyone. And then the Halfhand and I were captured by her people.

"The Halfhand wanted me in with the Wildlings as a spy, so he told me to do whatever it might take -- whatever it might take -- to convince them that I'd turned deserter. Then he stole a sword and attacked me for my desertion, and I had to kill him." He hesitates. "They believed me a little more then."

The guilt of killing Qhorin Halfhand had eaten at him for a long time; it had changed him. He said I must not balk, Jon had told himself, over and over, to persuade himself that he'd done his duty and that he would have been a craven to do otherwise. Yet even now, the words of the telling still stick in his throat, making his voice rougher. He swallows before he continues.

"After that, I did what he'd commanded me to. I went where they took me and I met their king and learned what I could. They were trying to escape the White Walkers too, and they were planning an attack on Castle Black. But I had to prove that I was one of them, and that my vows meant nothing to me. The girl wanted to lay with me, so I did it, and then... I loved her for a while.

"I climbed over the Wall with them. I drew the line at slaying an old man who raised horses for the Watch for nothing but his gold. I got away and escaped to Castle Black, but not before the girl put three arrows in me."

He doesn't tell Daenerys yet that Ygritte was a good shot and might have killed him if she'd wanted to. In truth, he wants to tell her as little as possible about Ygritte… enough so she'll understand, and no more.

"When I got back, some in the Watch wanted to hang me as a traitor and deserter, but Maester Aemon spoke for me." He frowns, adding, "I think he was your great-uncle. King Aegon's brother.

"The whole time I was out there, and for a long time after I got back, I couldn't decide whether what I was doing was right. Was it wrong because I killed a man and broke my vows, or was it right because I did it for the Watch and by the man's command? If I felt something for the girl, had I really broken my vows with her for the Watch? If I left her to return to the Watch, was that wrong, too?"

Some of how this ended should be clear to Daenerys: he now has great allies among the Free Folk, and there is no hint of any other woman.

He moves his hand from her face to her wrist, to bring her hand from his cheek to his heart, where he holds it. His story isn't a threat to her; it's only a story about honor, about a time when it had demanded that he behave dishonorably again and again, about how the honorable path isn't always clear in every situation, even when he looks for it.

"It's not my conclusion that was important, it was the questions. Many things would have been different if I hadn't gone among the Free Folk. We wouldn't have the allies that we have now. We wouldn't have Winterfell. The Night King's army would be far bigger than it already is.

"I can't regret it anymore."

I'll try not to wake everyone up with my excited squealing over here. This is the journal!

I'll definitely stick him on the Perimeter Guard for now.
