applications: open

Applications will be open from 10:00 PM EST on the 1st of every month until 10:00 PM on the 7th of every month. They will be processed as quickly as possible after they are submitted; if you have not received a response by the 10th of the month, feel free to contact the mod.

Applications will be open from October 1st until December 7th, and will be processed on a first-come first-served basis.

● Please post the entirety of your application in a comment to this entry.

Applications may receive a verdict of Approved, Declined, or Revisions.

● Declined applications can be reworked and resubmitted during the next application cycle. If an application is declined 3 times, it cannot be resubmitted.
● Revisions must be submitted within 48 hours of the revision request being sent out. If this is impossible due to extenuating circumstances, please contact the mod.

● There are currently 58 Character Slots still available in the game.

● While the game is close to character cap, reserved applications will be processed before unreserved applications, with unreserved applications being processed at the end of the cycle until cap is reached.

● Application Queue: All applications that would put the game over character cap will be placed in the queue below and processed on a first-come-first-serve basis. Applications in queue will be processed as drops happen, regardless of whether the application cycle is complete.

● Accepted character types: fandom, original, canon AU
● Non-accepted character types: fandom OC, AU
● The character limit is 2, with 2 apps allowed per month; players can buy up to a maximum of 4 character slots with AC bonus points. There is a cast cap of 15 characters per cast at this time.
● Linked samples should be no older than 1 year.
● Application challenges are not allowed at this time, but if you would like to apply for a character that is on reserve, please submit the application with "not reserved" noted in the subject line, and your application will be considered if the reserved application is declined or not turned in.

● CLARIFICATION ADDED 04/02/2017: Applications must fit in ONE COMMENT on the application page. In special situations such as original characters or canon characters without an information link, please try to keep the summary concise and stick to major turning points. If you have been as concise as possible and it absolutely will not fit in one comment, please store the background section in an entry on your journal/musebox/website and link it to keep the application within one comment.

● CLARIFICATION ADDED 02/03/2018: The Strengths and Weaknesses sections are a stand-in for the usual personality section and should relate to the character's personality strengths and weaknesses. These sections should not include anything related to abilities and the weaknesses should not be 'positives in disguise' (for example, stating that a character has a weakness to iron because they are a fairy would not be an acceptable response to the weaknesses section, nor would stating that a character is too generous). Every character has good and bad personality traits, please include both.

● CLARIFICATION ADDED 03/10/2018: Linked samples must be from a publicly available source. Friends-locked samples are not acceptable for use (via screencaps or other methods), unless they have been unlocked and made public.

● canon point: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. From the chapter "Many Partings," after she and Celeborn have split off from the main group and started back to Lórien with their entourage.
● age: Chronologically: around 8,000 years; she was born before the creation of the sun, so exact numbers aren't really possible. Physically: Certainly an adult, but other than that, difficult to pin down, seeming both old and young at the same time. "No sign of age [is] upon [her]," for what that's worth.

● (canon) background: Galadriel on the LOTR wikia Because there are multiple versions of her backstory, I've written a history that outlines the version I follow as a player. In general, I prioritize canons, so that, if information from one source contradicts another, I know what to follow. My rule of thumb: The Lord of the Rings > The Hobbit > The Silmarillion > Unfinished Tales > Anything else.

● abilities:

First of all, there's the standard elf things:

Better than human sight and hearing: Elves have been shown to see and hear things from absurd distance.
Light and swift of foot: Elves generally move more quickly and quietly than should be possble for their size.
"Immortality": kind of a misnomer. Elves can be killed and they can die from grief, but they do not age as humans do and won't die of old age.
Sleep is not strictly necessary: Elves can rest their minds by meditating, rather than sleeping, and achieve rest that way.
Perfect memory: a blessing and a curse, really. Elves are like elephants; they don't forget.

And then there's Galadriel's personal gifts and abilities. These are never explicitly spelled out, so this is my own attempt to break it down.

Telepathy/sanwe-latya: While this is not an uncommon skill for elves, Galadriel possesses it to an extraordinary degree. This includes the ability to read minds and to communicate with others with her mind through words, visions, feelings, etc.
- General Awareness/Surface Knowledge: We know from her questioning of the fellowship in Lórien that she is able to sense certain people for quite a distance. She is able to state that Gandalf did not pass into Lórien, implying two things. First, that she is able to sense the "spirit" or "mental presence" of people well enough to distinguish specific individuals and, secondly, that she is capable of doing this over a great distance. These don't seem to be thoughts or specific communication, so I'm assuming it's more like recognizing someone's voice. If you know them, you can give them a name; if not, you can maybe guess at some details.
- Reading Thoughts and Two Way Communication: She can read people’s thoughts. She explicitly acknowledges as much to Frodo by verbally responding to one of his thoughts. I tend to think that this is an ability that can be turned on or off, though, given that she doesn’t do this all the time and that she seems to be pretty sane- which constantly hearing the thoughts of hundreds/thousands of elves would not encourage. She also is able to speak into the minds of others, which means that she can hold a non-verbal conversation perfectally well (as she does in ROTK in "Many Partings," actually).
- Testing hearts: Probably an extension of the above, but worth mentioning seperately because of its significance and intensity. In The Fellowship of the Ring, she basically "tested" each of the characters by offering them something they desperately wanted. It's said to feel like being intensely questioned.
- Blocking her mind: Basically, this is her ability to prevent other people from reading her mind. Canonically, she is able to keep Sauron out of her mind, so it's safe to say that she has some very strong walls up.
Foresight
- Visions and insight: She can see "what is, what was, and some things that have not yet come to pass." It seems that these visions come both unbidden and, to a lesser degree, on command.
- With the Mirror: She seems to be able to use this to show visions to others. I think it likely works as an amliphier for her own powers. I would not mention it except that it's essentially a silver basin filled with water from a running stream, so she could easily re-create it.
Healing: Some of this is just knowledge of herbs and skill, but it's also likely that there is a certain amount of magic ability involved in Elven healing.
Large Scale Destructive Power: In a passage in Lord of the Rings, Galadriel goes to the fortress of Dol Guldur after Celeborn and his forces have taken it and “threw down its walls and laid bare its pits.” Given that this is the only time in all the text about her that anything like this is mentioned, it's fair to say this isn't the type of thing she does often. It's highly unlikely this will ever come up in rp, but it's there.
More Mundane Skills
- Diplomacy and Politics: Self explanatory.
- Swordcraft/Weaponry: She hasn't used it for quite a while, but she has fought in battle. She probably can shoot a bow and arrow, but like most Noldor, she favors a sword.
- Smithing: Something else she hasn't done in a long time. However, she did train for a time under Aulë, the Vala associated with craftsmanship- again, something common for her family.
- The Arts: It's worth mentioning that the 'magic' concealing cloaks of Lórien worn by the Fellowship were woven by Galadriel and her maidens. Galadriel also displays a talent for singing, playing the harp, and composing poetry and song.

Because she is very aware of her own power and also of the dangers of power, I really don't need any of her abilities nerfed to avoid her being gamebreaking. I'm fine with putting some limits on her, though, if it would make things easier.

● strengths:

Compassionate- Kindness and compassion are truly at the core of Galadriel's character. Whatever her other failings, she cares deeply for people. It's what keeps her involved in the larger events of Middle Earth, it's what prevents her from ever falling to her darker tendencies, and it's absolutely the best of her.
Determined- She literally walked across a field of ice to get to Middle Earth. I really don't need to say more than that. But I can. She has counted Sauron as an enemy since the First Age of the world. By the time he's defeated, it's the Third Age and she's still a symbol of hope- keeping other people from falling into despair. This is not a woman who gives up. Ever.
Perceptive and intelligent- Part of this is being psychic, but she is also a very intelligent woman and quite clearly very adept at understanding people and their motivations. She's old enough to have seen a great deal and she's learned from all of it.
Adaptability (for an elf)- Elves, by and large, aren't known for being incredibly adaptable. But Galadriel, a woman of mixed elven heritage who identifies primarily as Noldor, has lived the majority of her life in primarily Sindarin company and culture. 'Galadriel' is, in fact, a Sindarin name- as is her daughter's name. She came to Middle Earth without even speaking Sindarin. This isn't unprecedented in elves, certainly, but it indicates an openmindedness and a willingness to compromise that one might not expect from someone who can be so stubborn and prideful.

● weaknesses:

Pride- Her greatest sin, by far. While a certain amount of pride is certainly merited, she can take it to excess. Her pride kept her from asking for pardon from the Valar when many other leaders of the rebellion did. She was eventually pardoned, but she had repented long before- she could not bring herself to humble herself. Put simply- she's been known to hurt her own cause.
Desire for Power- By the canon point I'm taking her from, she has already refused the One Ring, but it certainly wasn't easy. Her motivations are never sinister; she always wants to do good. But she is very much aware of the corrupting nature of power and her own fallibility. Nevertheless, the temptation is still there and she's probably always going to be the type of person who would rather lead than follow and expects her words to carry a certain weight.
Elven Perspective- Elves just see things differently; it's a fact. They understand time in a very different way, they perceive the environment differently, and get them on the topics of magic or spirituality and you are going to get a headache. Unlike some of her relatives, Galadriel hasn't spent a great deal of time among mortals (and almost none among those who were not familiar with elves), so there are certain things that she just isn't going to understand at first.
Excessively subtle- Being psychic and a politician have made her a little too aware of the masks people wear. She's good at dancing around topics, not quite saying what she means, and being cryptic. She's intimidating enough as it is, but this just frustrates people or makes them think she's hiding something. She's not (necessarily); she just rarely thinks in straightforward ways.

● housing (optional): Shared accomidations would be a nice compromise between torturing the royalty with sharing a bathroom and indulging her with private quarters, I think. So, if possible, I'd like to request that.

[It takes an embarassingly long time for the video feed to come into focus, but when it does, Galadriel is very careful posed in front of it, as if speaking in front of cameras were the most natural thing in the world. Ignore the fact that she just spent a minute or two figuring out how to work the thing. She smiles and gives a little dip of her head in greeting before she speaks.]

Mae Govannen. I am called Galadriel. It is a pleasure to meet you all, though, I will admit, I would have prefered it be under other circumstances.

First, I wish to make it known that I am a healer and, should any require my aid, I am more than willing to lend it. [She knows there is a medical system, but emergencies and weird situations happen.] Secondly, I would ask if there are any here who know of 'Arda,' or of 'Middle Earth.' [She pauses, and then after a moment adds:] 'Eä' is also a term that might be used.

● prose/action sample:

She can't win, can she? For thousands of years, she has dealt with her exile. In recent years, she has endured the growing Sea Longing. Lately, she has waited to sail back to her homeland with anticipation- and with sorrow, knowing that she will be parted from Celeborn for no small amount of time. And now, she is here- a third place, neither of her homes, with none of her loved ones at all.

She would laugh, if her heart did not ache so.

She allowed herself this small moment of reflection- of private grief- rarely and briefly, and it often seemed to be the stars that brought it out. On those occassions, she usually found herself wandering by the river, not with any real destination in mind, but simply needing to make use of her restless energy.

It's also not terribly unusual for people to interrupt her on her walks, usually out of well intentioned concern for her safety, something she considers mildly ridiculous. So when someone approaches her, taking care to match the speed of her steps, she stops them, cutting them off before they have a chance to speak.

"If you are here to lecture me about walking alone at night, you may depart. I am perfectly capable of defending myself, I assure you."
