riverview: applications
Applications will be open from 10:00 PM EST on the 1st of every month until 10:00 PM on the 7th of every month. They will be processed as quickly as possible after they are submitted; if you have not received a response by the 10th of the month, feel free to contact the mod.
Applications will be open from October 1st until December 7th, and will be processed on a first-come first-served basis.
● Please post the entirety of your application in a comment to this entry.
Applications may receive a verdict of Approved, Declined, or Revisions.
● Declined applications can be reworked and resubmitted during the next application cycle. If an application is declined 3 times, it cannot be resubmitted.
● Revisions must be submitted within 48 hours of the revision request being sent out. If this is impossible due to extenuating circumstances, please contact the mod.
● There are currently 58 Character Slots still available in the game.
● While the game is close to character cap, reserved applications will be processed before unreserved applications, with unreserved applications being processed at the end of the cycle until cap is reached.
● Application Queue: All applications that would put the game over character cap will be placed in the queue below and processed on a first-come-first-serve basis. Applications in queue will be processed as drops happen, regardless of whether the application cycle is complete.
● Casts at or close to Cast Cap: Marvel Cinematic Universe: 15/15; Marvel Comics: 12/15
● Accepted character types: fandom, original, canon AU
● Non-accepted character types: fandom OC, AU
● The character limit is 2, with 2 apps allowed per month; players can buy up to a maximum of 4 character slots with AC bonus points. There is a cast cap of 15 characters per cast at this time.
● Linked samples should be no older than 1 year.
● Application challenges are not allowed at this time, but if you would like to apply for a character that is on reserve, please submit the application with "not reserved" noted in the subject line, and your application will be considered if the reserved application is declined or not turned in.
● CLARIFICATION ADDED 04/02/2017: Applications must fit in ONE COMMENT on the application page. In special situations such as original characters or canon characters without an information link, please try to keep the summary concise and stick to major turning points. If you have been as concise as possible and it absolutely will not fit in one comment, please store the background section in an entry on your journal/musebox/website and link it to keep the application within one comment.
● CLARIFICATION ADDED 02/03/2018: The Strengths and Weaknesses sections are a stand-in for the usual personality section and should relate to the character's personality strengths and weaknesses. These sections should not include anything related to abilities and the weaknesses should not be 'positives in disguise' (for example, stating that a character has a weakness to iron because they are a fairy would not be an acceptable response to the weaknesses section, nor would stating that a character is too generous). Every character has good and bad personality traits, please include both.
● CLARIFICATION ADDED 03/10/2018: Linked samples must be from a publicly available source. Friends-locked samples are not acceptable for use (via screencaps or other methods), unless they have been unlocked and made public.
● A mod-created sample application can be found here. This is an example of a canon application. The strengths section has been filled out in bullet point form, and the weaknesses have been filled out in paragraph form - both options or a combination thereof are acceptable.
● Sample Applications: Ronan Lynch (Canon Character; Written Background), Yuuri Katsuki (Canon Character; CRAU), Derek Hale (Canon Character; CRAU), Tolemi Pagoda (Original Character), Benjamin Holt (Original Character)

● prose/action sample: write out or link to an example of how you write your character in interactions; this sample should be a bit longer and can be done in prose or action bracket style and can be set in the game or your character's canon, though please avoid over-use of NPCing other characters - this is about your character; links can be from the test drive meme, other games, PSLs (as long as they are not AU), or memes - but should not break the fourth wall (Dear Player etc.)
Please fill out the information in the form below and submit it in its entirety in one comment to this entry. If your application doesn't fit in one comment, it needs to be trimmed - application standards are weighted to quality rather than quantity.

● (original) world:
A Very Brief History of The World;
Shai’s world – well, universe really – is a set of 29 planets that exist along an artificially constructed latticework of jump ports. (The planets are nowhere near each other, existing in different solar systems across the universe, but the Lattice makes short work of the distance) There used to be 30, actually, which sort of kicks off the whole story.
The universe it takes place in has all sorts of things. Aliens! Superheroes! Assorted other Oddities! Only they aren’t really called ‘superheroes’ because the percentage of the population that has some sort of strange, extranormal ability is around forty percent (though this does vary by planet) so it's rather more commonplace than something that warrants being called 'super'. A few of these metahumans (colloquially known as culgenics) are classified as ‘world-killers’. People so powerful it’s kinda Terrifying. One such dude was an Iraphine man named Astal Port.
Now, Port had a sort of life-long grudgematch against a culgenic from the planet Janirak, Tiriesi Lowe. The long of the short of it is: Tiriesi killed his family, and Port retaliated by, you know, destroying Janirak. Completely reasonable thing to do, right? Right.
Only a very small fraction of the Janiraki population survived. Mostly people who were either off world or had some sort of protective power or ability of their own. By the time the dust had cleared, there were about a million of them left (down from about eighteen billion) and they were kind of understandably pissed about it.
The fall-out from that on an economic and social scale was enormous. Janirak was one of the powerhouses among the Lattice, with a chokehold on the technological sector and a focus on spaceflight advances, so huge corners of the Lattice economy collapsed overnight. Planets that used to have everything to gain by a partnership with Janirak closed their doors to refugees who had nothing left to offer, and the survivors became a displaced band of shipboard wanderers who promptly picked a fight with Iraphos, for harbouring the terrorist that sort of destroyed their world. (okay, it was more complicated than that. Iraphos actually sent ships and aid when it happened, but when one of their ships was Mysteriously Destroyed while carrying their crown princess, things escalated into a fullblown War.)
Owing to the severe depletion of their population, this was a Terrible Idea. Think of it like the entire population of Hawaii throwing rocks at Russia and expecting not to get stomped. A lot of the remaining Janiraki people were killed, many more were thrown into internment/POW camps. Iraphos made a lot of enemies by ‘picking on’ these poor disadvantaged refugees, which just sort of made them dig their heels in harder from a political point of view. This particular war was seven years long and by the end, literally no one on either side looked good. It was honestly barely even a war, given that the Janiraki side had to rely almost entirely on hit and run guerrilla tactics. So... maybe ‘a series of unfortunately bloody skirmishes’ would be a better way to put it.
It’s been sixteen years since the destruction of the planet by the time of Shai’s canonpoint. In that time there have been numerous wars, a whole passel of political fuckery, and assorted other Bullshit.
After the nonsense on Iraphos, some of the surviving Janes formed a sort of peacekeeping militia with an eye to policing powerful culgenics, but also mostly existing so that they can step in if they feel another world is under the same threat theirs was. They try very hard to stay Neutral about when and where they deploy, but, you know. It doesn’t always work out that way.
Shai is herself a powerful culgenic, and is the media liaison and second in command to the leader of the Greyjanes, Liranya Hal.
Backstory Bulletpoints:
ϟ Born and raised on Janirak, in a country called Eyteri. She had a happy childhood as an only child with her parents (two ladies and a dude) who were hella polyamorous. Her family wasn't rich but they were comfortably middle class and she never wanted for anything.
ϟ Shai was seventeen when her world was destroyed. She was in her first year in university for electrical engineering at that time. She and several of her classmates survived because one of her classmates was able to freeze time in small, localized pockets that sort of exist outside of the normal continuum. They were later picked up by a rescue ship.
ϟ She, along with the other survivors, spent a lot of time in the rather cramped quarters on the Ark ships, right up until someone destroyed one of their Iraphine escorts. When that escalated to war, she joined immediately. As a powerful culgenic and a front-line grunt she saw a lot of fighting in the first few weeks and then promptly did Dumb Shit and got herself captured trying to take on way too many people at once because she lowkey wanted to die.
ϟ Spent three years in the Evichta camp. This ran the usual Unpleasant Gamut that most internment camps do. Starvation, beatings (not random Done For Angst type things, she definitely baited people into them on purpose) and the like. The worst part for her was the fact that all prisoners with abilities had to wear suppression collars that nullified their abilities. Being cut off from her electricity was basically worse than death.
ϟ Had her freedom negotiated three-ish years later. This was a tactical move on behalf of the Greyjane captain, Liranya Hal, who knew from a list of names that Shai was pretty powerful and worth Having Out and On Her Side. Shai then spent a great deal of time avoiding therapists and rising through the ranks of the Greyjane organization until she was the second in command. She is pretty much the Greyjane 'enforcer'. She plays a very good boogeyman and absolutely uses her powers to intimidate and terrify any opposition to their cause.
ϟ Now she works in tandem with various governments to keep tabs on other powerful culgenics. She sometimes takes time off from being a space naval commander to train new recruits. She is absolutely that person who will drag you out of bed at three in the morning and make you run until you puke and then tell you to do it all over again.
● abilities: She OP. No lie. But mostly:
She’s a scary-powerful electrokinetic. She can manipulate electrical energy in most of its forms, from storms right down to the electrical impulses in the human body. Her control is very, very fine. Say goodbye to your sinoatrial node if she desperately wants you dead, for instance. She can metabolize energy which means that she can kind of use herself as a battery in dire situations until she burns out. She can also make energy constructs out of lightning. She’s used this for everything from shields to dildos. Versatility is key. She has very slight ability to manipulate electromagnetism but her grasp on that side of her powers is sort of not great and she doesn’t have a lot of room to improve on it. Once in a while she’ll stick a spoon to somebody’s face.
She’s also a good hand-to-hand combatant. Janirak’s gravity was about 1.7 times that of Earth, so she’s heavier than she looks and quite a bit more dense, her bones are stronger as a result and so is she.
As a career soldier, she’s also got experience with tactical strategy, is comfortable in leadership roles and has experience with a variety of weapons.
I guess I can also say she’s sort of like the media front of the Greyjanes. She does all their interviews, handles their press releases and talks to reporters, so she has some skill in the arena of diplomacy and tact.
I’m fine working with any nerfs you want, as long as she keeps enough of her powers not to feel helpless. She has Issues with that that would make her pretty unfun to play. That said, I’m not really interested in making her unfun to play against, so. You know. She rarely uses her abilities in Huge World-Changing ways, preferring to use them for fun and to be flashy and show off around others anyway, right up until she’s actually in a fight.
● strengths:
She’s pretty damn unflappable. Shai has Seen and Done so much shit at this point in her life that it’s hard to rattle her. She’s cavalier and laid-back and doesn’t really experience regret as a rule. She is very secure in who she is, what she’s done and lived through, and she conducts herself 100 percent as someone who has Nothing To Prove.
She’s extremely clear-sighted and objective, capable of looking at things from an outside perspective and making the best call she can based on the scenario and situations at hand. Shai tends not to get bogged down in sentiment. This is something that’s very useful as a military commander, because she can make those difficult choices, and she can live with knowing that sometimes the people under her command aren’t going to come home as a result of something she’s done.
Shai is a very nurturing person. She looks out for those around her, and will aggressively mother-hen anyone who needs it without much prompting. She tends to pour a lot of her energy into being a Protector. In all honesty, it’s not even for the benefit of the people she’s protecting as much as it is for her own.
● weaknesses:
One of her strongest negative traits is her avoidance. Sure, she’s hard to rattle – but you know why? Because she has absolutely zero interest in managing her own issues. She has convinced herself that she’s Over Them and she is-- to the extent that she’s functional and not paralyzed by PTSD.
I talked a little about how she’s very objective, and how this ties into her being a good military commander, but the truth is Shai doesn’t tend to value human life all that much. She’s apathetic about death, she can sympathize with the pain of it or injury, but she still expects people to be functional in the face of enormous loss and she disdains those that aren’t. She cares about Her People, of course, but even that can be set aside as needs dictate.
She can be pretty hypocritical. She expects people to be open and honest about their issues when she is anything but. She is also a big fan of lying by omission and being misleading/misdirecting in her conduct with others all in an effort to cling fiercely to what little privacy she has-- but hates when people keep secrets from her of any sort. A+, Shai.
● skills (optional): She’s a military commander with godmodey lightning powers and media liaison experience, go nuts. She was also an engineering student once upon a time with a focus on the electrical side of things. Does the city need an emergency battery? idek.
● housing (optional): She really prefers her privacy. She can absolutely live in a shoebox sized apartment but alone is definitely better.
● network username: cdr.ebbisaryn
● network sample: with Clark Kent | with Hanzo Shimada
● prose/action sample: with Taako | with Genji Shimada
