riverview: applications

applications: open

Applications will be open from 10:00 PM EST on the 1st of every month until 10:00 PM on the 7th of every month. They will be processed as quickly as possible after they are submitted; if you have not received a response by the 10th of the month, feel free to contact the mod.

Applications will be open from October 1st until December 7th, and will be processed on a first-come first-served basis.

● Please post the entirety of your application in a comment to this entry.

Applications may receive a verdict of Approved, Declined, or Revisions.

Declined applications can be reworked and resubmitted during the next application cycle. If an application is declined 3 times, it cannot be resubmitted.
Revisions must be submitted within 48 hours of the revision request being sent out. If this is impossible due to extenuating circumstances, please contact the mod.

● There are currently 58 Character Slots still available in the game.

● While the game is close to character cap, reserved applications will be processed before unreserved applications, with unreserved applications being processed at the end of the cycle until cap is reached.

Application Queue: All applications that would put the game over character cap will be placed in the queue below and processed on a first-come-first-serve basis. Applications in queue will be processed as drops happen, regardless of whether the application cycle is complete.

● Casts at or close to Cast Cap: Marvel Cinematic Universe: 15/15; Marvel Comics: 12/15

application guide

● Accepted character types: fandom, original, canon AU
● Non-accepted character types: fandom OC, AU
● The character limit is 2, with 2 apps allowed per month; players can buy up to a maximum of 4 character slots with AC bonus points. There is a cast cap of 15 characters per cast at this time.
● Linked samples should be no older than 1 year.
● Application challenges are not allowed at this time, but if you would like to apply for a character that is on reserve, please submit the application with "not reserved" noted in the subject line, and your application will be considered if the reserved application is declined or not turned in.

CLARIFICATION ADDED 04/02/2017: Applications must fit in ONE COMMENT on the application page. In special situations such as original characters or canon characters without an information link, please try to keep the summary concise and stick to major turning points. If you have been as concise as possible and it absolutely will not fit in one comment, please store the background section in an entry on your journal/musebox/website and link it to keep the application within one comment.

CLARIFICATION ADDED 02/03/2018: The Strengths and Weaknesses sections are a stand-in for the usual personality section and should relate to the character's personality strengths and weaknesses. These sections should not include anything related to abilities and the weaknesses should not be 'positives in disguise' (for example, stating that a character has a weakness to iron because they are a fairy would not be an acceptable response to the weaknesses section, nor would stating that a character is too generous). Every character has good and bad personality traits, please include both.

CLARIFICATION ADDED 03/10/2018: Linked samples must be from a publicly available source. Friends-locked samples are not acceptable for use (via screencaps or other methods), unless they have been unlocked and made public.

● A mod-created sample application can be found here. This is an example of a canon application. The strengths section has been filled out in bullet point form, and the weaknesses have been filled out in paragraph form - both options or a combination thereof are acceptable.

Sample Applications: Ronan Lynch (Canon Character; Written Background), Yuuri Katsuki (Canon Character; CRAU), Derek Hale (Canon Character; CRAU), Tolemi Pagoda (Original Character), Benjamin Holt (Original Character)

prose/action sample: write out or link to an example of how you write your character in interactions; this sample should be a bit longer and can be done in prose or action bracket style and can be set in the game or your character's canon, though please avoid over-use of NPCing other characters - this is about your character; links can be from the test drive meme, other games, PSLs (as long as they are not AU), or memes - but should not break the fourth wall (Dear Player etc.)

submit an application

Please fill out the information in the form below and submit it in its entirety in one comment to this entry. If your application doesn't fit in one comment, it needs to be trimmed - application standards are weighted to quality rather than quantity.

Eames | Inception | Reserved

[personal profile] personifications 2018-01-02 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
player information
name: Mars
age: 25+
contact: [plurk.com profile] mustafar; @myrmidon#9028 (discord)
other characters: N/A

character information
name: Eames
canon: Inception
canon point: Post-Film.
age: 31 (approx.; no concrete canon # exists).

(canon) background: wikia.

abilities:

lucid dreaming: a necessary piece the whole concept of dream-sharing. Lucid dreaming is essentially the idea of a dreamer being cognizant and aware of the fact that they're dreaming. For someone with dream-share specialities, having this degree of control is a first, basic step.

forgery: out of the dream space, this works much like the word's literal definition. Falsifying identities/signatures, documents, art, etc. "References are something of a specialty."

dreamshare: not necessarily an "ability" when this is experimental technology and science within canon, but he is well-acquainted and trained with the PASIV Device and the sedatives that it uses.

forgery pt. ii/dream projection: his particular specialty within the dreamshare space, as a "forger," is to be able to project the images and impressions of people within the dream (acting the part, so to speak). Additionally, as a "forger," he pays acute attention to people (their mannerisms, speech, appearance) and is able to project himself as other people, including those known to the dreamer.

weapons training: he is well-trained in the use of multiple types of weapons and in various fighting techniques.

strengths:

charm: Eames gets away with half of what he does (cheating at gambling or networking jobs and social clout he shouldn't have) with a general amiability, ease with personal interaction, sense of humour/wit, and overall charisma. For example, even if he'd forged poker chips and spelled a piece wrong (no never), his charm allows him to distract from these small, logical details outside his purview.

empathy: His specialty within canon is to understand and imitate people (in and out of dreamspace), and right at the core of that knowledge (and subsequent inference of behavior, traits, feelings, etc.) comes from an empathic drive. His specialty (seen in his background research on Fischer and his drilling into a job target's "relationships" in an effort to better understand their mark and how to imitate those closest to him in a way that doesn't arouse suspicion) is based on feelings and relationships first.

innovation: Eames is an actor, and one of his most fundamental drives is creativity. He's a man who knows how to roll with situations that don't go to plan (and with the wrong dreamer, plans are frequently "guidelines" at best). He's adaptable within his own limits, and even if he argues with the parameters of authority or a situation over his head, the next step is always to find a way out. (See: shifting the setting of his own dream level to create shortcuts on the fly, but also later expressing doubts in the possibility of the mission's success). In one of his core canon relationships, he calls one of his closest colleagues uncreative. This isn't meant to be a literal summation, but a note that Eames defines the dominance of right-brain thinking (Arthur's left creating a natural foil).

weaknesses:

cavalier: One of his biggest faults is his lack of commitment and neglect of his own feelings (he's so used to crafting different personalities that the lie has become one). He exhibits contradictions of character (not seeming to take Dom's job proposal seriously and yet is the one to see it through to the end with the reliability, the casual ease with which he slips between the role of dream projections and himself to the point of making jokes with non-expert "team" members, and even how devil-may-care he is about everything but settling into a "role").

insubordinate: Eames has a disregard for different types of authority. Even outside of the shared dreaming, he is a professional liar at best, criminal at the most honest. He forges documents, identities, poker chips (ostensibly also money, but this is an inference at best). He treats Dom's attackers with humor, clientele with little professional filter (at least outside of the "role" he does take seriously), and even his team members with regular teasing. He doesn't subscribe to authority and hierarchy in a traditional sense.

recklessness: As the aforementioned "right-brain" allegory, Eames' capacity for rolling with the punches also has a tendency to take a negative turn, leading straight into recklessness, rashness, and casual disregard (a small piece of a larger problem). He can sometimes miss the trees for the forest, focusing so much on his role that his understanding that something with a plan has gone wrong (like the hostile projections on the first dream level of the Fischer Inception being missed until the team is caught up in the middle of a firefight that nearly proves to be a plan-fatality).

job skills (optional): Listed somewhat already in abilities, but he has skills in lying/fabrication, acting and drama, and noted proficiency with multiple different types of weaponry (typically projectile).
housing (optional): Private (if possible), shared > communal otherwise.

David "Dave" Stutler | The Sorcerer's Apprentice (reserved)

player information

age: 32

character information
name: David "Dave" Stutler
canon: The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010 movie)
canon point: Post-canon
age: 20
(canon) background: Summary of the film - Dave's biography

abilities:

-Science: Dave is a scientist, his specialty being physics (though he's also the kind of guy who knows lots of random trivia). If you need any help with experiments, fixing stuff, machines/electricity, this genius is the guy to go.

-Magic: Dave is also a sorcerer, descendant of Merlin and heir of his magic (which makes him the "Prime Merlinean"). Sorcerers in this universe are people born with the capability to use the entire power of their brains. Instead of wands like in most stories, these sorcerers use rings to cast their magic. The rings project the electrical energy of their nervous system into the physical world, allowing them to modify anything around them as they wish. However, as the Prime Merlinean, Dave doesn't need his ring to cast his magic.

He's still an apprentice with lots to learn, so please don't let the description of his magic think he's some sort of super OP god. He COULD be, but that's still some time away. For example, I headcanon he still puts the ring on to train and while he's still mastering new spells until he gets the hang of them. He's also been taught to use magic responsibly, so he won't go around trying to mess with everyone. Magic in this universe is presented mostly as a form of being creative with the laws of physics, but that doesn't mean there aren't spells, which go from transmutation to bending of the elements.

Here is a post (that I wrote myself) with a full explanation of his magic and other spells available. It should also be noted that Dave counts with enhanced durability. This doesn't make him Superman or anything like that, but he's definitively more resistant to hits (physical or magical) than the average human - they still hurt though. It's also implied he's gonna live quite longer than average people. And lastly, the one way for sorcerers in this universe to lose their powers is electrocution.

strengths:
-Book smart
Dave is very intelligent - when it comes to the sciences at least. It's even implied that he's skipping years in college! Dave understands and learns concepts pretty quickly and, while it may take some practice to actually do a spell right, he's good at applying those concepts in a new (and maybe even creative!) way when the situation needs it.
-Reliable
He may whine a bit about it first, that's for sure. But at the end of the day, there's no doubt about it: you can count on Dave. He does it because helping people is important, yes, but also because he seeks approval. He hates letting people down and being a disappointment.
-Passionate
He calls himself sappy, which is also right - he's a sap, a romantic, and he won't shut up about topics he loves. Dave pours his heart in what he does - a pure heart, according to his master, and he wears that heart in his sleeve. Which is a double-edged sword of course... but that's for another section.
-Pacifist
Dave hates conflict, and will only engage if necessary (to help someone, for example). He's not easy to provoke, since he's used to being made fun of after spending most of his school life being bullied. (Unless it's a dumb argument on the internet. GenericRPG #2 was way better than GenericRPG #1, how dare you.)

weaknesses:
-Low self-esteem
A pretty standard case of being "the outcast". Dave doesn't think very highly of himself. And while accepting magic in his life and getting a girlfriend have improved his confidence quite a bit, it's been mostly a boost of giving Dave hope for the future and his potential to achieve great things. Meanwhile, he still feels pretty out of place in most average situations.
-Awful liar
Wearing his heart in his sleeve means Dave isn't good at controlling his emotions when it matters. Even the bad guy comments on what a terrible liar he is, and that very same bad guy takes advantage of Dave's feelings and insecurities to get what he wants for his plan. This also why he can be a bit blunt with his commentary.
-Socially awkward
You'd think someone who has lived in New York all his life would be better with crowds. And sure, it's not a problem when it's "faceless" crowds, just a bunch of people that are too busy to notice the guy walking next to them. But parties? Gatherings? Meetings? Dave just isn't into that. He's very introverted, preferring the company of just one or two people he trusts, books and his dog over partying. And when he does engage people, he comes off as very awkward, blunt and feeling out of place (as described above).
-Holds grudges
Dave does not forget. It could be a good thing, since that means he'll always remember anyone that share a minute of their time with him. But his main issue is not letting go of the wrongs of the past - forgiveness isn't exactly something he gives easily.

job skills (optional): Pretty much what it says in the abilities section: science and magic. Since they're here to contribute to the rebuilding (terraforming?) of this moon, Dave would express interest in helping developing methods and help with research (maybe do some exploring too FOR SCIENCE!- I mean for the new discoveries).
housing (optional): Shared floor, if possible.
network username: catstate

network sample: from the test drive: one - two
prose/action sample:

Dave used to be a pretty anti-superstitions kind of guy. But since he accepted sorcery in his life, he sees stuff like rituals with new eyes. Maybe there's something in them after all, even if it's just some sort of placebo effect. Wouldn't that be a kind of magic of its own?

So here he is now, watching the bonfires that have been set up all along the beaches of the river with a notebook under his arm. There are a lot of people here... which he should've expected, he knows, this is a festival after all. But it still makes him nervous. As a New Yorker, crowds of unknown faces aren't a big deal for him, but this is more like a party, with people making conversation and commenting on their notes. Dave isn't good at parties, and he isn't sure he wants to share his notes. What is he going to write anyway? Mmmh...

in some parts of the tri-state area they still refer to having a nervous breakdown as "pulling a David Stutler"

He stares at the words that leave his pen with quite an ease (he has so many issues to deal with after all) and decides to burn it with a magic spark of fire that appears with a snap of his fingers. It's... satisfying as hell, he realizes. Like he's finally managing to leave that behind, like he could truly believe he has a chance to start over here, around people that don't know the embarrassing stories that haunt him.

This little bit of found confidence pushes him to approach the bonfires. Maybe he can give them a chance after all.

other characters: n/a

character information
name: Victor Frankenstein (Doctor Whale)
canon: Once Upon a Time
canon point: 6.03 “The Other Shoe”
age: physically he's in his mid-thirties but because of the curse, he is technically leaning more toward sixty

(canon) background: Doctor Whale and Victor Frankenstein

(original) world: n/a

abilities: He figured out how to harness the power of lightning through machines to bring the dead back to life, with the assistance of a magical heart. Since it seems that the magical heart is the key to successful resurrection, I don't see this particular ability needing to be nerfed. And honestly, it would have to be a very special circumstance for him to even consider doing it.

-He's also shown to have drawing talent. While in the Enchanted Forest, he was shown sketching one of the flowers and his sketch was a near-perfect copy of the flower.

-It's a safe assumption that Victor also knows how to fire a pistol, though he didn't actually pull the trigger on Gerhardt.

strengths: Victor has a strong devotion to his family. It was because of this devotion that he focused his studies on trying to bring back the dead. At first it was to bring back his mother to please his father, and later it was to bring back his brother so their family would stay united. He would do just about anything for his family and has, like lying to Regina and reviving Daniel in an effort to get back home to Gerhardt. His devotion usually led to bad decisions but his focus was always on his family.

Victor also takes strangeness in stride. For example, on meeting Rumplestiltskin he accepted the idea of other worlds. He isn't easily startled by the weird and unusual, which is a good quality to have considering his life in Storybrooke. This likely comes from his attitude of doing what's unexpected to keep life interesting. He isn't usually caught off guard or left floundering for what to do when faced with an unusual situation.

Although he doesn't always show it in the best way, Victor is supportive and caring to the people of Storybrooke. He was there for David when the man was recovering from his coma, and attended the party for Mary Margaret after she was cleared of murder. He also reached out trying to help Ruby when she wanted to leave Storybrooke. He even acted as comfort for Regina after the supposed death of Henry before Emma broke the curse. After the curse broke, he was there helping with recovery and continued to act as the town's doctor. He never backed away from this job even when there were flying monkeys in his hospital or he was personally attacked by Zelena.

weaknesses: Victor isn't afraid to speak his mind and act defiant of authority. He can be blunt in his language, bordering on unprofessional or creepy at times. He doesn't make much of an effort to sugar-coat his words or put other people at ease. His defiance of authority isn't always bad, like when he continued his studies despite his father trying to enlist him as an army medic. But it could also be potentially dangerous, like when he led an angry mob to Regina's door to attack her after the curse broke.

Victor carries a lot of responsibility and guilt for what happened to his brother. Ruby helped him come to terms with this a little, but those feelings are still there. Victor already had a responsibility as the eldest to take care of his brother, so when Gerhardt died because of Victor's actions, that responsibility was compounded and he was weighed down by guilt. This could even be expanded to include a responsibility for all his patients, as he was visibly upset when he didn't know how to help Henry after the boy ingested poison. Greg Mendel was the straw that broke him and while he's no longer at a suicidal point, he does care deeply about his patients and still holds himself accountable for keeping them healthy.

Victor isn't much of a people person. He tends to keep to himself unless he's needed in a medical capacity. He doesn't have many close ties, thus not having people he confides in. This feeds into his tendency to speak bluntly and it causes him to internalize his emotions until they break like when he attempted suicide. It's possible he keeps a distance because he doesn't handle loss well.

job skills (optional): Medical Doctor- Surgery/OBGYN, pediatrician, general practitioner. Can probably fill in any necessary role that a medical doctor would have in a hospital, but these are the ones he's shown to do in canon.
Science Teacher? Mary Margaret thought it was a good idea. Knowledge of chemistry, anatomy, electricity, probably other stuff not shown on screen. He clearly has leadership skills, since he was able to round up an angry mob and take them to Regina's front door.

housing (optional): He'd prefer private but whatever works is fine

network username: I feel like with public addresses, he'd use “j.whale” because of the negative connotations to his real name. Or maybe “prometheus” if he wanted to be more true to himself without using his real name.

character information
name: Willa Monday
canon: The Finder
canon point: End of Season 1
age: 16

(canon) background: Wiki Link - HERE

abilities: Hacking and technology based scams, pick-pocketing, never forgets a face, lip reading, skilled thief as being a part of the Gypsy criminal family.

strengths:
Independent. She is used to being on her own, despite having a very large criminal family looking over her shoulder. Her mother lives in Alaska while she's serving her parole in Florida. She doesn't need anyone else in order to survive and always keeps going.

Brave. In the first episode she faces two men with guns without flinching. She isn't a strong fighter, preferring stealth and smarts for her criminal activities, but that doesn't mean she'll run from a fight. She knows how to put up a strong face and tell people to fuck off. She is also not afraid to hit someone with a bat when they're being assholes.

Smart. Willa had been getting away with running scams and being a thief since she was four years old. She's very smart and uses that to her advantage. She's used to being on her own and knows the way that the world works. She's also able to understand Walters, the Finders, way of thinking which throughout the show displays a high level of intelligence and sometimes doesn't make sense until it is all thrown together; not completely unlike Sherlock. She's also very good at puzzles and ends up being a key in helping solve problems through the series.

Skilled liar. It is very difficult to tell when Willa is lying and she lies a lot. One of the reasons that the head of her family wants to keep her in their criminal family is because that he can't even tell when she's lying. She has the talent and the skill to make a large impact on their family and he doesn't want to lose that.

weaknesses:
Headstrong & stubborn. Willa doesn't like it when people tell her what to do. She's constantly clashing with her parole officer and it is extreme, to the point that, her whole personality changes solely because she's around a woman in law enforcement who has control over her future. She can be defensive and lash out when things don't go her way. She doesn't back down which usually ends poorly for her and gets her into trouble. She will also jump into dangerous situations without consulting others. At one point she completely disregards her guardian's warnings and ends up with a gun positioned on her head.

Sarcastic. Willa has a quip for everything. It makes it seem like she doesn't taking anything seriously, even when she is, because she comes off as flippant with her comments. Walter is one of the few people within the show who seems to understand that Willa's way of helping involves heavy sarcasm and at times lying. Much like her headstrong attitude, this often backfires for Willa.

Mean. She can be abrasive or brazen but there are points in the show where Willa is just mean. She tells Leo, her employer, that he's using her as a substitute for his dead daughter. What makes this remark worse is that Willa doesn't understand that she's being mean until Leo gets mad at her and tells her that she has to leave. Willa then goes to Walter to figure out what to do and her idea of making it up to Leo is crippling the business man responsible for killing Leo's wife and child.

Her moral compass doesn't exactly point north.

player information
name: Kit

other characters: Stan Uris

character information
name: Athelstan
canon: Vikings
canon point: Season 3, Episode 5
age: unstated, possibly late 30s

(canon) background: wiki

abilities: artistic, calligraphy, hand to hand combat, ancient theology, farming, cooking, general handiness, several languages (Saxon, Latin, Scandinavian, Frankish confirmed in canon)

strengths:

Loyal: One of Athelstan's most defining traits is his unwavering loyalty once it is won. He's had to choose between remaining with Christians in Wessex and returning with Ragnar. In Wessex, he was able to continue his religious studies, his art and translating other texts. He had also had access to more materials in secret from the King. However, he leaves all those things behind to go with Ragnar because in the end Ragnar is the one who had his loyalty. Athelstan is also loyal to his God, even when he feels conflicted over whether the Norse gods are also real. When he was captured in Wessex originally, he was crucified and on the cross he remained loyal, repeating Bible verses and praying even while under immense pain.

Educated: Athelstan was left to the Church young because his family couldn't afford another child. He traveled and spent his life studying religious texts. He was able to learn different languages and about different places that many in that time had never heard of. His education is a great strength for him because it is a large reason as to why he is curious and interested in learning about the Vikings and their culture as well as sharing his own-- a large reason that he's further endeared to Ragnar and his family which is what keeps him alive for so long. His intellect and open mind endear him to the King of Wessex and make him useful.

Compassionate: Athelstan is taken as a slave. He quickly is integrated into Ragnar's family, caring for his children and farm. With the genuine care Athelstan takes with them it's undeniable that it's more than a sense of duty. Additionally, it's also one of his biggest failings. When Judith confesses her sexual desires for him he wants to help her and comfort her. This eventually leads him to breaking his vows to have sex with her.

weaknesses:

Trusting: Athelstan is very trusting. He doesn't seem to be able to see the worst in people. His trust often leads him to be naive. When he is first on Ragnar's farm, he tells him all about England and teaches him the Saxon language, only to be shocked that Ragnar uses that information to plan for further raids. While in Wessex, he insists that Ragnar and Ecbert can trust each other. He only sees the best in Ecbert and fails to ascertain how power hungry he is. This leads to the eventual slaughter of innocent farmers.

Magnanimous: Athelstan is very generous in the way that Christian beliefs would teach. However, both his generosity and his ability to forgive others proves to be a weakness for him, especially in the Pagan world. He lacks any ruthlessness. There are those that he should be wary of and not forgive, like Floki, but he never bears them any ill will. He never assumes the worst of people and neither does he try to change anyone.

Moral Conflict: Throughout canon, Athelstan battles with trying to reconcile whether both his God and the Norse gods can be real. He sees proof of them both and it brings him quite a bit of pain. At the canon point that he is coming from, it is the lowest point in his conflict. He breaks his vows in Wessex and has sex with a married woman. He then leaves the Christian kingdom to return to live with Pagans. It's difficult and painful for him to try and reconcile between the two.
