riverview: applications

applications: open

Applications will be open from 10:00 PM EST on the 1st of every month until 10:00 PM on the 7th of every month. They will be processed as quickly as possible after they are submitted; if you have not received a response by the 10th of the month, feel free to contact the mod.

Applications will be open from October 1st until December 7th, and will be processed on a first-come first-served basis.

● Please post the entirety of your application in a comment to this entry.

Applications may receive a verdict of Approved, Declined, or Revisions.

Declined applications can be reworked and resubmitted during the next application cycle. If an application is declined 3 times, it cannot be resubmitted.
Revisions must be submitted within 48 hours of the revision request being sent out. If this is impossible due to extenuating circumstances, please contact the mod.

● There are currently 58 Character Slots still available in the game.

● While the game is close to character cap, reserved applications will be processed before unreserved applications, with unreserved applications being processed at the end of the cycle until cap is reached.

Application Queue: All applications that would put the game over character cap will be placed in the queue below and processed on a first-come-first-serve basis. Applications in queue will be processed as drops happen, regardless of whether the application cycle is complete.

● Casts at or close to Cast Cap: Marvel Cinematic Universe: 15/15; Marvel Comics: 12/15

application guide

● Accepted character types: fandom, original, canon AU
● Non-accepted character types: fandom OC, AU
● The character limit is 2, with 2 apps allowed per month; players can buy up to a maximum of 4 character slots with AC bonus points. There is a cast cap of 15 characters per cast at this time.
● Linked samples should be no older than 1 year.
● Application challenges are not allowed at this time, but if you would like to apply for a character that is on reserve, please submit the application with "not reserved" noted in the subject line, and your application will be considered if the reserved application is declined or not turned in.

CLARIFICATION ADDED 04/02/2017: Applications must fit in ONE COMMENT on the application page. In special situations such as original characters or canon characters without an information link, please try to keep the summary concise and stick to major turning points. If you have been as concise as possible and it absolutely will not fit in one comment, please store the background section in an entry on your journal/musebox/website and link it to keep the application within one comment.

CLARIFICATION ADDED 02/03/2018: The Strengths and Weaknesses sections are a stand-in for the usual personality section and should relate to the character's personality strengths and weaknesses. These sections should not include anything related to abilities and the weaknesses should not be 'positives in disguise' (for example, stating that a character has a weakness to iron because they are a fairy would not be an acceptable response to the weaknesses section, nor would stating that a character is too generous). Every character has good and bad personality traits, please include both.

CLARIFICATION ADDED 03/10/2018: Linked samples must be from a publicly available source. Friends-locked samples are not acceptable for use (via screencaps or other methods), unless they have been unlocked and made public.

● A mod-created sample application can be found here. This is an example of a canon application. The strengths section has been filled out in bullet point form, and the weaknesses have been filled out in paragraph form - both options or a combination thereof are acceptable.

Thank you!

Hux likes to make up military titles for himself, in order to give himself a sense of authority over captains and the like, after he's integrated could he eventually call himself 'Squad Marshal' in the Surveyors special unit? It's a nice blend of his canon dream and rv gameplay. If so, I'll apply on the page.

player information
name: Jae
age: 31
contact: ninjae @ plurk
other characters: Poe Dameron, Chyler Silva

character information
name: Carson Beckett
canon: Stargate Atlantis
canon point: Post-Sateda (S3)
age: 35

(canon) background: here

abilities: SQUISHY NORMAL HUMAN like everyone else I play apparently

strengths:
compassion/empathy: Carson cares about people universally, showing an affection for life that stretches even to Atlantis's enemies. He dedicates a portion of his research to a retrovirus designed to "cure" the life-sucking Wraith of their need for human fodder, believing wholeheartedly at the beginning of the project that it will help the Wraith and their victims both. He even tries to protect his Wraith patients after one of them tortured him, and is horrified when the Atlantis team fires on the unarmed Wraith camp. He also makes a habit of checking in with his friends and colleagues, making sure they're able to sleep and manage depression, anxiety, and other concerns. He's a caretaker and always more concerned about the wellbeing of others than he is about his own.

dedication: Carson can be very single-minded in his pursuit of both medical advancements and medical solutions when his friends are in harm's way. He's regularly portrayed as willing to work himself into exhaustion for the benefit of others, and regularly in canon puts himself at risk to help his patients against the advice of his peers. He firmly believes in providing medical attention to anyone who needs it, regardless of who they are or what they might have done. At one point he tries to render assistance to an injured Wraith, and the only thing that stops him is a teammate opening fire and killing the Wraith.

courage: Carson is shown as being decidedly meek outside of crisis situations, but put him in the middle of a disaster and his courage shines. He doesn't hesitate to dive for his medical kit in the middle of a firefight, is on the forefront with a weapon when things start to go wrong off-world, and stands up to the leaders of other world's governments without hesitation when they try to implement dangerous medical procedures on a population unaware of the risks.

weaknesses:
indecision/uncertainty: Outside of a medical context, Carson can be indecisive and hesitant. He has the one particular area in which he excels, one area in which he acts as an authority, but in any other context he's inclined to let someone else call the shots and give him direction rather than trying to assert himself. He's also very wary of trying new things, particularly if those new things have to do with alien technology. He hates having the Ancient gene that allows him to operate Ancient technology, because it places a burden of responsibility on him that he'd rather not deal with, in spite of regularly taking peoples' lives in his literal hands. At least in a hospital setting, he knows what he's doing.

low self-value: Carson frequently downplays his own value, referring to himself as "just a medical doctor," as not important enough to know sensitive information, and as under-qualified for his position. He's frequently assured by characters in canon that he has and is valued, but it never quite seems to stick. It's clearly something he ruminates on in bad moments, and it's very likely he labors under the yoke of imposter syndrome. The only times he forgets his self-consciousness is when he's actually at work.

insecurity: Tied to his low self-value is his insecurity outside of a clinical setting. He tends to have far more faith in others than he expects them to have in him, though this particular phenomenon seems limited to the people he counts as friends. His friends are, to his mind, infinitely more capable than he is in every respect outside of the medical field. …Except maybe Rodney. They're about equal when it comes to military stuff. But the point is, as far as friends are concerned, he's never quite free of the need to prove to himself that he's worthy of their help and affection. He gives both those things without thinking about it; he can't take them without feeling a debt.

job skills (optional):
He is the discoverer and a carrier of the Ancient Technology Activation gene, which allows humans to interact with specialized Ancient technology. He became chief surgeon and Chief Medical Officer on Atlantis thanks to his overall medical skill and cool head in a crisis, and he is a leading researcher in either galaxy when it comes to genetic manipulation and gene therapies. He a kickass doctor dude who probably has like five phds idk.

player information
name: Tessa
age: Over 25
contact: PM: [personal profile] divaricate | PLURK: [plurk.com profile] figureskating__
other characters: N/A

character information
name: Wanda Maximoff
canon: Marvel Cinematic Universe (Avengers)
canon point: Captain America: Civil War | Specifically, right after she's broken out of the Raft via help from Steve.
age: I play her as being 27 in CA:CW since canon has not specified her age.

background: Wanda Maximoff » Sokovia » Earth-199999 (MCU)

abilities:
TELEKINESIS: Wanda is able to move (including levitate and otherwise manipulate) a number of objects with her mind. She can pull things apart, and use this force to create a type of energy shield to protect herself and/or others. She can also send energy blasts from her hands.

TELEPATHY: Wanda can read minds (thoughts/dreams), and mentally communicate with people. She can do this at a level that is shown to be a pretty narrow focus. Her telepathy also allows her to mentally manipulate people to control their minds as well. She can put people in a trance-like state where she makes them see what she wants them to -- things like their deepest fears, for example (though what they're afraid of isn't decided by her) -- and trap them within that state while they interact with their hallucinations as if they're real. She experiences that along with them, though the victim is unaware of her being with them. With this, she can also influence the memories, actions, and thoughts of people, their emotions, and senses. This ability also allows her to induce various feelings such as pain or sleep.

WEAKNESSES/POWER LIMITATIONS: Even with her abilities, Wanda is still a regular human underneath that and can be killed by anything that would kill a regular human. Wanda's powers will not work on anyone who is immune to mental infiltration, or has any other kind of mental block skill that would not allow her to read their thoughts or otherwise mentally manipulate them. Any kind of sonic wave blasts sent at her will disrupt her focus enough to get her powers to be rendered temporarily unusable; shock fields of electricity will also block her powers. In games, I also play her powers to be something that doesn't work over network communications. As in, if she's communicating with someone via video/audio/text, she cannot use her telepathy on them during those mediums of interaction. Her telepathy is also null and void against any creature that does not have a living mind (i.e.: robots/androids would fall under this category, as would undead creatures like vampires).

PERMISSIONS POST: Located here, for people to opt in or out of, as I'm aware of the violating nature of her powers.

strengths:

(❝01❞ | compassionate) » Wanda has a great deal of compassion. Though she has grown up in less than ideal circumstances, she has remained with a largely soft heart towards others; she doesn’t want anyone innocent to have to suffer at the hands of anyone else or any government. She only ever agreed to the experiments that granted her powers because she wanted to protect her country and keep war off its streets and out of its cities. She and her brother were appreciated members of their community when they would go get supplies for others, et cetera. She’d do anything she possibly could to help and support someone else, even if all they need is a hug.

(❝02❞ | loyal) » Wanda is a very loyal person overall. First to her family (when they were alive), to her country and its people, and to her ideals. She wouldn’t intentionally do anything to betray those things, because she feels that without them, she doesn’t have a rock to stand on. They serve as her anchor and as her drive to do well and to serve each in any way she can.

(❝03❞ | tenacious) » Wanda doesn’t give up easily. She’s lost her family (in various war-related events), and has grown up in a war zone because Sokovia was always under attack and in conflict with (presumably Western) forces nearly all the time. She knows how to survive in such an environment, and will always try to physically and literally build herself up over and over, so that she can face the next challenge that life throws her way.

weaknesses:

(❝01❞ | volatile) » Wanda has a tendency to let her temper get the best of her when she’s trying to work through something. In the heat of the moment, she can lash out and take an action that makes things a lot worse (i.e.: when she mentally manipulated Bruce Banner, causing him to become the Hulk and wreck a city) than if she’d toned down her rage and taken an action that was more long term focused than short term.

(❝02❞ | guarded) » Wanda doesn't open herself up fully to very many people at all, which can make it hard for people to get genuinely close to her. She may let many know her on a surface level, but there are not many at all who know her innermost thoughts and emotions, and it's hard to get someone who can pry them out of her. This is both for her own emotional defense, and because she's lost almost everything in her life and she doesn't see the chance to open up much. She prefers to work through her issues herself or with Pietro.

(❝03❞ | stubborn) » When Wanda makes her mind up on something, there is no talking her out of it. This will put her at the disadvantage of not being open to other ideas and potentially get more insight or something even better than what she has decided to do. She probably should have killed Tony Stark before he took the scepter, but she didn’t, and that lead to her brother’s death and Novi Grad’s destruction in the end. She was too stubborn to look at every possible outcome.

job skills:
— Tactics.
— Some fighting capabilities.
— Survival skills.

housing: I have no preference.

character information
name: Kate Bishop
canon: Marvel Comics (616)
canon point: Hawkeye (2016) #14, after briefly seeing her mother
age: 23

(canon) background: character history & setting history

abilities: Kate is a baseline human, which means she has no special supernatural abilities which makes her easily vulnerable in any high level of attack against her. She's also generally accident prone on account of jumping recklessly into fights, which often results in a number of bandages on her person at almost any given time. Even so, she does have a fair amount of skills demonstrated in a fight:
ARCHERY: Kate's skills with a bow and arrow are quite advanced for her youth. She took up studying the weapon at a young age after witnessing Clint Barton's expertise in taking on a gang of mobsters with it. Later on, the World's Greatest Marksman himself took upon training Kate further. Kate is capable of shooting up to five arrows at once, and while she has before insisted on the impossibility of the "Robin Hood" shot (shooting an arrow straight through another arrow), she has been shown to pull off the feat herself.
👊 MARTIAL ARTS: Feeling helpless after a sexual assault experience, Kate immediately took up studying martial arts to provide herself with self-defense. This ranges from different techniques such as boxing and jiu jitsu, making her plenty experienced in a variety of forms of unarmed combat.
SWORDSMANSHIP: In addition to her martial arts lessons, Kate also took up fencing and the practice of swords, and proved to be very skilled at it, even surpassing her instructors.
🔍 PRIVATE INVESTIGATING: Kate's, uh, super great at detective work. No, really.

strengths:
RESOLVE: Kidnapped at a young age, Kate was rescued by the original Avengers, including Hawkeye, whom she noticed for his lack of powers and simple ability of shooting arrows, casting aside doubt that being ordinary could set boundaries when showcasing leadership. Years later, Kate is assaulted by a strange man one night on the street. Unable to defend herself, the incident temporarily consumes her with doubt and fear. But not accepting defeat, she furthers her training, taking lessons in boxing and archery while learning to be adaptable in combat, knowing that while there are things beyond her control, she can still fight back to protect herself and other people.

CARING: She received her innate caring nature from her mother, who traveled the world to further charitable causes, all while Kate's father worked in disreputable business deals and her sister lived in luxury. Kate chose to follow in her mother's stead, visiting soup kitchens and women's shelters. Later, as Hawkeye, Kate continues assisting the lesser-abled, wanting to inspire through action by setting the right example. At times, Kate has even been accused of becoming too concerned for others, stepping into situations beyond her capabilities, all to help the innocent.

ADAPTABLE: Kate understands life can throw unexpected turns in her direction and accepted needing to adapt to altering circumstances. Losing access to her family wealth, she tries to make the most of living on a tight budget. Not only does she ultimately seek independence from her father, but she also realizes what she hopes to achieve as a superhero can't be done while remaining in Clint's shadow as his partner. Growing from her youth and inexperience, she no longer relies on the corrupted wealth of her family and proves herself as a capable hero without being the second Hawkeye.

weaknesses:
PRIDEFUL: Whenever accused of being wrong, Kate will retort with a fit of frustration, facing this often with her ex-boyfriend, Eli, due to both being leaders within their team, with their disagreements resulting in Kate yelling or physically pushing him away to get her point across. A similar attitude is also present in her relationship with Clint, in which Kate doesn't hesitate to shout at him over his passiveness and ignores Clint's accusations of her own flaws. This all draws back from Kate's desire for a sense of control, stemming from wanting to escape the helplessness she felt when she was sexually assaulted.

HYPOCRISY: Kate can often be quite judgmental, attempting to make others feel guilty for their actions despite committing them herself. Clint is a common victim, with Kate criticizing his habit of running away from his problems, even though she's guilty of the same transgression in her past relationship with Eli. This dodging of relationships is repeated in her spontaneous romances with strangers, which she often judges Clint for. Additionally, despite shaming her family's financial privileges, Kate dresses in expensive clothing and, for a time, continues to rely on her father's credit card for her living expenses until she's forced into poverty.

OBLIVIOUS: Because of her privileged past, Kate is sometimes oblivious when interacting with others, keeping an optimistic belief that her presence is always welcomed and valued. This is because, despite the conflict in her personal relationships, Kate returns to that determination to fix as many problems as possible. While her move to L.A. is originally seen as an annoyance by both the locals and the city law enforcement, she actually solves several cases in a row, developing a more trusting relationship with the aforementioned when they realize that Kate's intentions are for good.

job skills (optional): Total ace detective, excellent artist, has pinpoint accuracy.
housing (optional): Any communal!

player information
name: Gemma
age: 26
contact: [plurk.com profile] gemmabean
other characters: N/A

character information
name: Kravitz
canon: The Adventure Zone
canon point: Episode 69, shortly after the wedding.
age: 1000+, appears mid-30s.

(canon) background: To die, to sleep - to sleep, perchance to dream.

abilities:
Dual forms: Kravitz spends most of his time looking mostly human, but is also able to shift into the robed skeletal form he uses for combat.
Communication and travel between planes: Opening holes in spacetime and using those to move around between the material and astral planes. Using a configuration of raven feathers, he's also able to commune with the goddess of death where she resides on the celestial plane. Most of this won't be usable in Riverview, apart from being able to open portals purely in space and travel around the city using those.
Creation and possession of golems: Arranging inanimate matter into golem form and taking possession of it. He still feels pain if the golem takes damage, but when it 'dies' he simply leaves it. It's unclear if there's a limit on the size of the golem, but he's demonstrated at least 15ft.
Sensing the undead: Can sense the nearby presence of the undead, with more powerful undead creatures giving off a stronger aura. Sort of a tool of the trade.
Longevity: He's the Grim Reaper. He's been dead a long time already, so. Functionally immortal.

strengths:
Dᴏ sᴏᴍᴇᴛʜɪɴɢ ɢᴏᴏᴅ ᴛᴏᴅᴀʏ: Despite his introduction as an antagonist, Kravitz is actually more of an agent of natural law, only seeking to bring the protagonists to justice for their infractions against it. He obeys and keeps the laws set forth by the Raven Queen, but not just because they are laws: he believes in her, and genuinely believes he's doing the right thing. Despite his later willingness to help convince the Raven Queen to bend the rules, he still never professes willingness to break them.

Mɪɴᴅ ᴏᴠᴇʀ ᴍᴀᴛᴛᴇʀ: When it comes to achieving his ends, Kravitz is intelligent and resourceful - doesn't go in until he knows what he's doing, chooses his moments well and adapts to changing circumstances. His tactics are well thought out and difficult to predict. He's also a pretty well educated, well-read individual who leans toward what would be the smarter thing to do in any given situation. In fact he seems vaguely confused as to why people might make more emotion-driven choices.

Fᴏʀ ʜᴇ's ᴀ ᴊᴏʟʟʏ ɢᴏᴏᴅ ꜰᴇʟʟᴏᴡ: For being Death, he's surprisingly nice. He has kind of a silly sense of humor and likes making people laugh. He's as good as his word, even when it would serve him much better not to be, and willing to talk things over that perhaps he should be more obstinate about. He's personable and polite (provided you're not a bounty he's hunting) and just generally a stand-up gent.

weaknesses:
A ꜰʟᴏᴡᴇʀ ᴛᴏ ʙᴇ ʟᴏᴏᴋᴇᴅ ᴀᴛ: This is a man who puts on a terrible fake Cockney accent for work, for no reason at all. He looks like he's going to be smooth, but it's all on the outside - he's pretty socially awkward, and it comes with being a bit more preoccupied with outward appearances than perhaps he should be. Hence the dedication to his spooky aesthetic. Mostly he just wants to be thought well of, both in terms of visible appearance and generally as a person. Seeing as he's used to being seen as someone to avoid at all costs, it's more of a conscious effort than it would be with most.

Wʜᴇɴ ᴛʜᴇ ᴄʜɪᴘs ᴡᴇʀᴇ ᴅᴏᴡɴ: As good as he is at his job... usually... he also has a soft spot for wits and wagers, and finds it difficult to turn down a bet if he thinks he has some chance of winning. Even when not taking the bet in the first place would actually be more likely to result in getting what he wants.

Lᴏᴠᴇ ɪs ᴀ ꜰᴏᴜʀ ʟᴇᴛᴛᴇʀ ᴡᴏʀᴅ: Kravitz has one job, and that's to ensure that dead people check in to the astral plane where they belong. At first he doesn't manage that because he underestimated the protagonists' willingness to pull insane stunts. After that, he doesn't manage it because he's too taken with one of them. It's mostly just luck that they're not smart enough to really abuse the privilege. After spending as long as he has alone, he gets attached to people pretty quickly.

job skills (optional): Unlikely to mention anything other than being a bounty hunter by trade and having some skill in music, but it'd be neat to get something less combat related than his old day job, so honestly he could do most anything.
housing (optional): In a glass case of emotion Casa del Taako

character information
name: Barry Bluejeans
canon: The Adventure Zone
canon point: After the Wedding
age: Well he looks about mid-40s to 50s, that's the most important part. Actually about 160...something.

(canon) background: It's... THE ADVENTURE ZONE!

abilities: Magic (Speciality: Necromancy), Arcana Science, Swimming, Piano

Lich. Barry is a lich, which means that his soul will continue to live on as pure magical energy should his physical body die, exactly the same way as Lup.

strengths:
+ the lover. His strongest motivation for things was his deep and endless love for his Lup, but that is not the end of his heart, by any means. He adores his put together family from the Starblaster and the other friends they've made along the way. Feelings, emotions, these are all necessary to have a firm grasp on to maintain sentience as a Lich. Without that, he's chaos. He's nothing. The DM makes a point of mentioning how much it hurt when Tres Horny Boys forgot about him in that decade alone, how much he missed his family. Love powers this nerd. Love defines this nerd. He can't help it. He's a big ol' teddy Bar just waiting to spread more goodness around.

+ nerd alert! Ya boi is good at figuring things out, right? Always ready to to solve that Riddle Puzzle (or any puzzle) and make something a little bit more easy for those around him. He is a problem solver and does not give up easy. See, the whole Lich thing. He's always curious, always hunting for the next break, always ready to go to figure things out. The type of nerd to absolutely get excited about the unknown.

+ adaptable. 100 years of a different world every year will do that to you. Even without that very difficult trial, Barry would probably still have been the type to look at a problem and want to get his way out of it quickly and safely. Bring it, Riverview. You're probably one of the less dangerous worlds he's been thrust upon.

weaknesses:
- necromancy. Most wildly disagree with Barry's usage of Necromancy as a way for he and Lup to stick around when their bodies died during a cycle. They needed each other, right? It only makes sense for them to find a way to help each other in any way they can - to add another strategy against each dangerous world. However, it does slap the laws of nature right in the face. Barry may have only used necromancy against willing subjects, but he still was willing to do whatever was necessary to help, even if it meant playing with death. The worst part is he doesn't entirely see the problem beyond the obvious danger of how they could lose their consciousness. They were consenting, so what's everyone bent out of shape about?

- hesitant. He's less likely to act when it concerns him personally. Barry, before he learned how to swim, didn't want to jump in the water and have fun for fear of looking like 'a goobus' in front of his then crush. He doesn't want to come off as awkward, nerdy, or do something embarrassing. This can hold him back in his personal life to a detrimental amount. A 'I loved her for 21 years and never made a move because I didn't want to be rejected' kind of detrimental amount. He's also a Lich/Reaper who's afraid of the dark so. That's embarrassing as hell.

- nerd alert, part 2: nerd harder. Barry can lock himself away Jack Skellington style. Days at a time, barely remembering to eat if it weren't for his friends and two certain elves coaxing him with That Good Shit™. Typical nerdy boys, right? Ugh. Always gotta pound the metaphorical pavement for their Eureka moment.

character information
name: Cullen Rutherford
canon: Dragon Age
canon point: End of Inquisition, after the defeat of Corypheus
age: 30

(canon) background: Cullen on the Dragon Age Wiki
His particular WS includes Riona Cousland becomes the HOF and she, along with her party, saves Cullen from the Tower of Kinloch and repair the Circle, brokers peace with the werewolves and Dalish elves in the Brecillian Forest, helps Bhelen Aeducan to tkaethe throne of Orzammar after receiving the crown made by the Paragon Caridin before the Anvil of the Void was destroyed; chooses not to taint the Urn of Sacred Ashes in Haven to cure Eamon Guerrin of his near-death poisoning; has the restored Circle save Conner Guerrin so no blood magic need be used and Isolde Guerrin lives; Alistair Theirin becomes King of Ferelden and marries Riona Cousland after the end of the Fifth Blight.

In Kirkwall, Garrett and Carver Hawke immigrate with their mother during the scramble from the Fifth Blight; side with the mercenary company to gain entrance to the city proper; discover the red lyrium idol with Varric Tethras and Anders the mage only for Carver to catch the Darkspawn Taint and have to join the Grey Wardens so he’d live; recruit all companions. Garrett then goes on to romance Merrill the former First of the nearby Dalish clan; gives the book to Isabela during the Qunari invasion; single-handedly fights the Qunari Arishok and is named Champion of Kirkwall; slays Anders after he blows up the Chantry and kills hundreds of innocent people to start a war; sides with the mages in the Kirkwall Circle, kills Orsino and then Meredith; leaves Kirkwall to draw off attention to his companions.

At Haven and Skyhold, the Herald of Andraste/Inquisitor is Mahanon Lavellen, a Dalish Hunter of Clan Lavellen; sides with the mages during the struggle between the mages and Templars, but conscripts them into the Inquistion as they have shown they cannot be trusted; romances Cassandra Pentaghast; reconciles Empress Celene and her elven lover Briala; chooses to leave Hawke in the Fade to fight the Nightmare; conscripts the Grey Wardens to fight alongside him; chooses to save the Qunari Dreadnaught and solidifies alliance; drinks from the Well of Sorrows himself; helps Morrigan find her son Kieran in the Fade but recruits the Guardian of Mythal to help fight Corypheus; backs Vivienne to be chosen as Divine Victoria, successor to Divine Justinia.

abilities: When taking lyrium, Cullen can nullify magic, overpower demons, take down rogue mages and cleanse an area of curses just like any other Templar. However, when he is not, he still has all of the physical training and skill of a competent warrior and the ability to both inspire men to follow him and the education to be an excellent war general and advisor to the Inquisitor.

strengths:
- Cullen is extremely self-aware of his defects. After some time of reflection the fact that he didn’t do enough and allowed his anger and hatred to blind him for a while to the suffering of everyone in Kirkwall, he begins to change and grow. It’s this that allows him to leave the Templar Order when he realizes it’s broken and he can no longer help others from within and joins the Inquisition.
- Cullen is extremely protective of those in his charge. It doesn’t matter If they are soldier, mage, Templar, civilian or the Inquisitor, he will make sure that as many people are safe as he can possible manage. It is, in fact, part of why he is so good at being a leader, but only because he knows that every person he couldn’t save deserves to share in the credit of the victories the Inquisiton secures.
- Procuring his loyalty isn’t exactly the easiest. You must either prove that you are worth his time or someone who is willing to go as far as he is to help others. If you can do that, Cullen is the man you want to guard your back, to support your moves—even if he doesn’t initially agree with it, and he will hunt down anyone that attempts to harm you. He is as fierce and as loyal as the Mabari Warhounds of Ferelden, which is rather fitting, considering he will always be a Ferelden citizen, a child of the village of Honnleath.

weaknesses:
- Cullen can be rather serious and driven. He will throw himself into his work to avoid issues with his personal life, work, and the lyrium addiction he is fighting. Because of the fact that he is so ready to give 500% to what his cause is, if he cannot give all that he is, he feels inadequate to do his job. This is a fact that is actually brought up in conversation with Cullen that others find him too serious. Of course, the other person is Varric, who calls him Curly, so who knows if he’s completely earnest about his assesment either.
- He is a man haunted by his nightmares and failures. While this allows for a lot of personal growth, it has also made him look and feel older than his thirty years. Adding to that is the fact that he has stopped taking the addictive lyrium mixture the Order relied on so heavily for its troops. So, not only is he suffering from what amounts to withdrawal from magical cocaine, he has nightmares of the time he was held captive by the mages he was supposed to protect in Kinloch and the guilt of not doing enough in Kirkwall to shackle him down and self-flaggelate with.
- He has been known to have a rather bad temper. After being saved at Kinloch by the Hero of Ferelden, he insists that all of the mage of the Circle are blood mages or tainted and impetuously calls for the entire Circle to be killed. When he’s in Kirkwall, he also goes after a Templar recruit that is behaving suspiciously and is found by Hawke’s party beating the crap out of the guy for information. By Inquisition, he seems to have mellowed, but there are times where his temper shows its ugly head, especially in the War Room with the other advisors when Templars are dismissed by Leliana in favor of the mages.

job skills (optional): observant, deadly in a fight, determined to help others

It has come to my attention in the last few days that certain parties have been plastering inflammatory posters about the city guard all over town. While I am aware that we are not perfect people, I will not stand for comments about...our body parts to be shared with all and sundry.

For those responsible, you have twenty-four hours to remove these lies before I find you.

For those not, please ignore these spurious lies. It does no one any good to spread rumors, though they might seem more entertaining.

character information
name: Ariadne
canon: Inception (2010)
canon point: In the airport after the Fisher job has been completed.
age: 23

(canon) background: http://inception.wikia.com/wiki/Ariadne
(original) world: N/A

abilities: architecture: she’s clearly good at design and thinking about buildings in terms of the physics and actual space they inhabit; she’s a grad student with plans to do it for a living
architecture within dreamsharing: designing on paper is one thing, as is dreaming up buildings and streets, and mazes – but to do all of that and incorporate the rules of dreaming and tricking a subconscious takes particular skill
dreamsharing: the ability to take people into your dream, or be present in theirs with the assistance of technology and drugs.

strengths:
Imaginative: While it could be argued that architecture is a particularly restrained artform, it’s clear when we see Ariadne take charge of the environment around her in a dreamscape that she sees those restraints as the most creative part. That bending the existing physics to her will, distorting the structure of bridges and buildings is what helps her extend her creative mind and what makes her adapt so quickly to dreamsharing and the job of an architect.

Conscience: One benefit of being a true outsider to dreamsharing and Cobb and his team is that Ariadne has the benefit of being able to truly acknowledge the dangers inherent with Cobb and his grief that has taken the form of a psychotic Mal within his subconscious. While for the most part everyone else is more focused on general dangers – the dreams not being discovered by Fisher, the intricacy of inception and the layered dreams, etc – Ariadne isn’t loyal to Cobb, she sees no reason to protect HIM but rather protecting the others, but the by-product of that is becoming Cobb’s conscience. If he isn’t going to tell the one person that he should truly trust – Arthur – then she is at least going to be there to keep him in check.

Adaptability: Ariadne has to process a lot of information very quickly after she passes the “interview” for the job. She has to come to terms with the worlds that Cobb and his team live in. She has to try and work around the fact that he is very clearly falling apart after the loss of his wife and the long separation from his children while ensuring Cobb’s weakness (and secret) doesn’t kill them all. She has to do all of this while helping each dreamer create the levels within the larger dream, and while knowing that if they get caught her entire life as she knows it will be no more. If they come out of it alive. She does all of this while still maintaining a certain level of grace and professionalism, and proving why she’s the best for the job.

weaknesses:
Overconfidence: Ariadne is quick to assume she’s mastered the ability to manipulate the dreamscape. She is quick to alter it, to add in the addition of known buildings and structures; memories of locations. She isn’t listening to Cobb when he says never to use memories because it’s the quickest way to let the dreamer know something is wrong, that their subconscious will attack because you’re altering the world around them. As such, she does indeed get attacked because she is the intruder.

Sceptical: Not as in a religious belief, but more of a lack of faith and belief in the team’s leader, Cobb. From the beginning she was the one to experience negative effects within his dreams. From both her curiosity, and his lack of control over the manifestation of Mal. She didn’t believe in Cobb until the last possible second when she thought he would be lost in limbo.

Nosey: Linked to her scepticism of Cobb is her nosiness about why he is the way he is, about why Mal is still someone that appears in his dreams, and someone that will be a danger to the entire team. She has to discover his secrets when she sees him dreaming alone. She takes it upon herself to join the dream and follow Cobb and then expressly go where he tells her not to – into the “basement” where Mal and the memory of the night when she killed herself is supposedly locked away. It’s not the true Mal, it’s a distortion which is fed by Cobb’s guilt and attacks without care when she considers Ariadne an intrusion on her time with Cobb. Ariadne wouldn’t have been in quite so much danger had she managed to respect Cobb’s privacy.

[ Ariadne doesn’t consider it cowardly to address the network through text. It’s just easier than transmitting a video where people could read her true opinion on such a topic. It’s getting harder and harder to pretend that dreamsharing and the manipulation of dreams was all fun and games. That it was an exercise in pure creation and manipulation of physics. She blamed Cobb more than she blamed the others.
She blamed that horror he had stuffed down in his subconscious that had tried to kill them all.
She blamed her own curiosity and eagerness. ]

Has anyone else found it hard to enjoy a dream after suffering a particularly vivid nightmare?

player information
name: Kit
age: 29
contact: [plurk.com profile] poetanarchy
other characters: Stan Uris, Athelstan

character information
name: Richard Campbell Gansey III
canon: The Raven Cycle
canon point: Post the end of The Raven King
age: 18

(canon) background: wiki

abilities: The voice of a King: Gansey is able to use a certain 'voice' when speaking with extreme conviction and emotion and meaning it can influence people to do as he commands.

strengths:

Charming: Gansey is an extremely charming teenager. He comes from old money and a political family. He always seems to know how to talk his way into people's good graces and use his charm to get his way.

Intelligent: Gansey is an extremely intelligent character. He has done well in school over the years, he's well traveled and spent a lot of time studying under older academics and exploring the topics that most interest him.

Caring: Gansey is very spoiled and privileged but this has not made him selfish or self-centered. He always cares about his friend's well-being and happiness. A lot of times he tries to throw money at their problems thinking that will be what can fix everything and make them happy and not really able to understand how that's not always well received. He always goes out of his way to try and help with what he has within his means. He knew that Ronan would be hurt if he was in trouble with the school so he ended up paying a bribe to save Ronan from the repercussions of his actions.

weaknesses:

Entitled/Privileged: While a lot of time Gansey uses his wealth and status for good, it does leave him with a bit of naivety and inability to understand his friends who are not wealthy. He tries to help Adam with his monetary problems and consistently fails to understand how he hurts Adam with it and why Adam needs to be independent financially. He views his money as a tool and forgets that it is one that not everyone was born with.

Two-Faced: Gansey can be a bit two-faced. There's a side of him that is extremely confidant and charming and that is the one that gets shown the world the much. He can come off as cocky and arrogant and sometimes even uncaring. His other side is the fragile and gentle side of Gansey that's just like most teenagers, insecure and afraid. The two-faced side of him is sometimes most pronounced in the way that he rarely calls people by their first names. He is always calling Blue, Jane, because it creates a certain safety net for him.

Obsessive: A driving force of Gansey's characterization is his obsessive personality. He is obsessed with finding Glendower and everything about him. It drives him 24/7 and he'll lose sleep and time working toward his goals. He also obsessively creates a model Henrietta that's extremely detailed. The reason that this is a weakness, while in some ways it is also a strength, is that his obsessions become his purpose and without them he is very lost.

character information
name: Riza Hawkeye
canon: FullMetal Alchemist
canon point: Around Chapter 102, when her throat is slit in order to force Roy to open the Gate.
age: Mid 20s

(canon) background: History
(original) world: N/A

abilities: Hawkeye has incredible sharpshooting skills with both handguns and rifles. She also knows a lot about different firearms so that they can be cleaned and maintained properly. She has excellent administrative skills as well, having had to keep offices in order under both Roy Mustang and Fuhrer Bradley. She did things such as paperwork, making coffee and made sure that everyone does what they're supposed to do. She also has basic hand-to-hand combat skills as well and can take on different covert ops, doing what she needs to do in order to complete the mission.

strengths:

Loyal - Riza is probably the most loyal person that you could ever know. She follows Roy Mustang without hesitation and does what she can to help him accomplish his goals and makes sure that he stays on a path that will lead to accomplishing his goals. She will also do whatever she can to help protect the people under her, even if it means that she might get hurt. She is willing to sacrifice her own life so that others can continue on and

Calm - Riza is calm in some of the most extreme circumstances. She is able to keep a level head and not let her temper cause her to make major mistakes. She's only seen loosing her calm once, when she thought that Roy Mustang was dead. Most of the time when others loose their tempers, she is the one holding them back or doing something to make sure that they don't get themselves killed.

Compassion - While her professionalism may make her appear to be cold to those who don't know her, Hawkeye has great compassion for those she considers her friends. She wants to do what she can to help others, even if they have already passed away, such as after Ishval when she buried a small child that had been killed in the massacre. She does her best to try and shield the Elrics from the darker parts of being in the military, such as preventing them from seeing the bodies of Nina and Shou Tucker after their death and disagreeing with Roy about hiding the death of Maes Hughes.

weaknesses:

Single-Mindedness - Riza can get very single minded. Her ultimate goal is to see Roy Mustang at the top of the military and she'll do whatever she can to make sure that he does it. When she is told by Lust that Mustang is dead, she looses her will to live, only regaining it when she finds out that he is alive. She will also completely ignore orders to abandon or leave him in a place and she doesn't hesitate to yell at him if he does something that might compromise his goals.

Cold - Riza often keeps her emotions to herself, which means that she often comes off as cold to people that she doesn't know. She doesn't let anything appear to get to her at all, keeping a straight face even when dealing with the worst of information. She also tries to keep everyone focused on the current task, even if something bad is going on.

Dirty Hands - During her time in Ishval, Hawkeye has learned to accept the consequences of her actions and has decided to sacrifice her own happiness and dirty her hands to make sure that peace is brought about for the people. She'll do the dirty work that needs to be done as long as she knows that someone else doesn't have to do it.

job skills (optional): General administrative skills, experience as a soldier with a specialty in rifles and handguns.

housing (optional): Close to Roy Mustang if possible.

network username: r.hawkeye

network sample:

[She's looking over the phone she was given, unsure if it's recording. The way she is dressed would be rather shocking to those who know her. She's not in uniform for one, her hair is down, and there is a massive bloodstain on the collar of her jacket. After a few moments she finally speaks.]

Colonel Mustang? If you're here, please contact me as soon as you're able. I still don't quite understand what is going on here, but if you did what they wanted you to...

[She shakes her head a bit.]

Does anyone know if the Elric Brothers are here? If so, where could I find them?

I could also use some directions to a shop where I could get some new clothes. Apparently they're unable to get bloodstains out of clothes before giving them back.

Colonel Mustang, Edward, Alphonse, please get in contact with me as soon as possible.

[And after that the feed cuts.]

prose/action sample:

This place confused her. How could something like this even be possible? Even in a world with alchemy, there was nothing like this. Such advancements in technology. She could get in contact with any number of people just by using the device that she had been given after waking up. That was the least of her worries though.

How could there be multiple versions of the same world? She had talked with the Elric brothers and Roy Mustang. She didn't understand how there could be different versions of the same people and how they can be very different from the one she knew, but still the same as well. At least Roy was from the same version of Amestris that she was, even if it was in the past. That still confused her, but not as much as seeing Alphonse in a human body. With Roy here, she could at least give him information that could prevent a lot of trouble in the future.

She rubbed her neck a little bit as she thought more about what was going on. She had a lot of information to absorb and she would eventually understand it all. For now, she needed to get a job so that she could have some sense of normalcy, even if she was stuck on some moon, quarantined like she had an illness.

character information
name: Shalimar Fox
canon: Mutant X
canon point: End of Season 2
age: 29

background: here

abilities: Short version: Shalimar has a mix of human and feline DNA which has given her enhanced strength, agility and senses on par with a cougar or lynx. This includes the ability to sense encroaching danger even before she sees it.

Long version is outlined here

strengths: Shalimar is independent, capable of taking care of herself without being overly reliant on others, including her own team-mates. She is confident and not afraid to turn up the charm when she feels she wants to, finding it relatively easy to get along with just about anyone she doesn't perceive to be a threat.

Though her fiery personality may go some way towards masking it, Shalimar can be incredibly compassionate, particularly where it comes to other ferals - even those she and Mutant X start out fighting against. To the friends she comes to view as family, she is particularly loyal and protective and there is nothing she would not do for someone who has reached that level of closeness to her - she will even enter a burning building to rescue someone she cares for that much, when fire is one of her biggest fears.

Her determination to overcome a weakness inherent to Feral mutants such as herself reflects how brave she is - backing down just isn't something she does, and even when she's at a disadvantage she has the strength of conviction to fight her corner. She's also not afraid to trust her instincts, at least when she pauses to listen to what they're telling her.

weaknesses: Shalimar's independence often leads to her becoming reckless, acting on impulse and finding it difficult to listen to others when they express concern for her. Her pride and stubbornness can often be her downfall, and she doesn't care for any comment that may be suggesting that she is less than capable of handling a situation. She's not shy about expressing as much, either - she can be hot-tempered and not even her teammates are entirely spared if they manage to set her temper off.

This is all compounded in instances where she allows her heart to overrule her head - at least two of her romantic entanglements have led to her making decisions which weren't in her best interests because of how strongly she felt for the man she was with at the time. This can also work against her when she shows distrust towards someone she has personal history with (as happened with Nikki Rodgers). Another matter working against her is her territorial nature - those she is protective of, she can also be somewhat possessive of at least to the extent where she doesn't appreciate being made to feel like someone is trying to come between her and them.

job skills (optional): Strong fighting skills, excellent agility, keen senses
housing (optional): The higher the floor the better, but no real preference beyond that.

Makoto Niijima | Persona 5 | Not reserved but what is willpower

[personal profile] phantomqueen 2018-03-02 11:00 am (UTC)(link)
player information
name: Rhi
age: 34
contact: [plurk.com profile] amazinglystrange or PM
other characters: None but I have also put in a reserved app for Shalimar Fox this round

character information
name: Makoto Niijima
canon: Persona 5
canon point: December 25th
age: 18

background: Here

abilities: Makoto is a member of the Phantom Thieves, which means she has the ability to enter the Metaverse and use her Persona to fight Shadows. Her Persona is Johanna, who focuses mostly on Nuclear-typed attacks (which do extra damage to those who are burning, frozen or inflicted with shock) with some healing and defensive support skills. She has an inherent resistance to Nuclear attacks and an inherent weakness against Psy attacks.

Because each Persona can only hold up to 8 abilities, the skills Makoto will have available to her are:
● Atomic Flare (Severe Nuclear damage to a single target)
● Mafreidyne (Heavy Nuclear damage to a group)
● Nuke Amp (Passive that boosts Nuclear damage by 50%)
● Nuke Break (Suppresses one target's innate Nuclear resistance for 3 turns)
● Marakukaja (Increased defence for all party members for 3 turns)
● Mediarahan (Full HP restore to all party members)
● Dekunda (Removes all debuffs to all party members' attack/defence/evasion)
● Energy Shower (Any party member affected by Confuse/Fear/Despair/Rage/Brainwash will be cured)

For the purposes of translating turn-based RPG mechanics, "party members" will cover Makoto and up to three others who are on her side/fighting alongside her and are within range; "3 turns" will cover three tag cycles (up until Makoto's third post after casting) and Mediarahan can be considered to heal all injuries provided the target isn't unconscious or worse.

As a Phantom Thief, Makoto is also able to change attire based on people's cognition of her - if she is seen as a threat, she will shift into her "Queen" outfit and this also allows her to make toy guns actually work so long as her target thinks they are real with Makoto's ranged weapon of choice being revolvers. She is also the Thieves' main strategist, being the one responsible for tracking strengths and weaknesses of the various Shadows they fight even after the team's Mission Control character joins the team.

More mundanely, even outside of the Metaverse Makoto is a capable fighter trained in Aikido and she is also an accomplished driver and motorcycle rider.

strengths: Makoto is incredibly hard-working and when she commits to a task, she commits to it fully and to the utmost best of her abilities. She is also a very responsible individual, who owns the tasks she has been assigned and will pursue them relentlessly until she has seen them through. It is these qualities which saw her become Student Council President and is in fact how she came to learn of the Phantom Thieves, since she was tasked with learning their identities shortly after the Kamoshida incident.

Makoto has a strong sense of justice which is what drives most of her development in both the main story and her Confidant arc, where she concludes that she wants to become police commissioner after so long feeling like she had been studying simply because it was expected of her. However, she is also very compassionate and cares deeply for her sister and her friends, just as quick to offer praise where it is due as she is to chastise them when she feels they are not looking after themselves or their future (for example, by not studying as much as they should).

weaknesses: Though her self-confidence grows over the course of the game, Makoto is still somewhat insecure, particularly feeling as though she is overshadowed by her older sister and afraid that she might be a burden to her. She also tends to suppress her emotions, if not to the extent that she once did, which tends to lead to her anger coming out mostly in how she fights in the Metaverse and also leads to her becoming reckless when she feels she needs to prove herself.

Because she has been raised into such a mature mindset and despite her compassion, Makoto can sometimes lack tact when dealing with her peers who act in more typically teenage manners - this forms part of the challenge she faces when trying to convince Eiko of what her "loving boyfriend" was really like as she struggles to understand why Eiko cannot see things as clearly as she does. And her mature mindset does not change that Makoto can be easily frightened when it comes to the dark and/or ghost and horror stories, which is the one time her usual calm demeanour breaks down.
