riverview: rules and procedures

rules and procedures

rules

Play nice. If you are making the OOC atmosphere of the game toxic for fellow players or the moderator, there will be consequences. This includes all the standard accepted rules of roleplay: don't infomod or godmode, keep IC separate from OOC, don't fourth-wall without permission, stay in character, and don't try to hog the spotlight all the time. All offenses will be handled on a case-by-case basis, as no two situations are the same. The mod reserves the right to issue warnings or remove players from the game, depending how serious the offense is, and to refuse applications or reserves based on a strongly demonstrated history of toxic behavior.

procedures

Reserves will be open from 10:00 PM EST on the 15th of every month until 10:00 pm EST on the 1st of every month, when applications open; reserves will be valid until 10:00 pm EST on the 7th of every month, when the application cycle closes and the reserves page will be cleared.

Applications will be open from 10:00 PM EST on the 1st of every month until 10:00 PM EST on the 7th of every month. Application challenges are not currently an option, though applications may be submitted for a reserved character in case the reserver doesn't follow through or is declined.

Character caps will be 2 per person with subsequent character slots to be purchased with activity points to a maximum of 4 characters per person. There will be an overall game character cap of 125 characters. These caps may be re-evaluated depending on moderator workload. There will be a cast cap of 15 characters per canon; this may be re-evaluated as needed.

Activity Check will be open from 10:00 PM EST on the 1st of every month until 10:00 PM EST on the 7th of every month. All comments used as activity proofs must be dated between the first and last days of the month and be posted to an entry from either the current or previous month.

● All players will be required to submit 1 thread of 10 or more comments for Activity Check proof.
● However, if your comments are 150 words or more, only 5 comments will be required. In this case, the 5 comments do not need to be consecutive, but they must be part of the same thread.
● Borderline word count comments will generally be 'rounded up.' For examples of what 150 word comments look like, please click here.
● In all cases, threads may be from either the log or network communities.

● Newly accepted characters will not have to provide activity proofs for their first month. They will be required to provide a link to their response on the Taken Characters page, and, if applicable, the Occupations page.
● If a player fails to reply to Activity Check they will be swept, and it will be treated as a drop, including the one-week grace period to rejoin without an application. If a character is swept for non-response and wishes to rejoin during the grace period, they would need to provide activity proof at that time.
● If a player doesn't have enough proof of activity, they may post to the Activity Check with a request for a strike. There is no option for two strikes in a row, so proof must be posted the next month or the character will be swept. If players are showing a pattern of taking a strike every second month, that will be dealt with privately on a case-by-case basis.
● While threads on the Test Drive Meme and individual character inboxes can be submitted for Activity Points, they cannot be used for regular Activity Check.

Activity check standards have been put in place as of April 2018. These standards have been put in place to ensure that players are engaging with the game at large rather than sandboxing or squatting. Players submitting AC that shows a low level of engagement with the game for three months in a row (from any of the bullet points below) will be given a reminder to submit stronger AC the following month. If this reminder is ignored for three months in a row, the player will receive a strike for Activity Participation. Two strikes (total of 9 months low-engagement AC) will be considered grounds for removal from the game. The following types of AC submissions are considered low-engagement:

● Split AC: This is when a player submits two short proofs instead of one proof to AC standard. This type of split proof is intended only to avoid a strike in the event of a rough month and shouldn't be relied upon consistently.

● Castmate/Close CR AC: This is when a player consistently submits AC-length threads only with castmates, ship partners, or other close CR. This is one I don't always catch because I am not completely familiar with the relationships that every character in the game has, but I do notice when AC is submitted very consistently with only one other character or group of characters. Please note that attempting to circumvent this by just threading with the same friend's second character will be noticed and counted under this bullet.

● Late AC: This is when a player makes AC but is consistently on the warning list

Appable characters include fandom characters, original characters, or AU versions of characters that appear in canon and have a personality distinguishably different from the original. Characters should have sufficient released information in English (or translated to English) to form a personality that is less than half headcanon, and be from a canon that has been released for a month or more at the time of application.

Non-appable characters include fandom-based original characters, AU versions of characters that are not supported by canon, and characters so minor that a case cannot be made for their personality without large amounts of headcanon. Characters who are non-humanoid will not be accepted, except in certain specific cases where the character is partially humanoid (eg. centaurs, robotic characters, or shape-shifters) - if you are uncertain if your character fits this description, please contact the mod via PM. CRAU characters may be considered on a case-by-case basis with extra scrutiny and application requirements to ensure that the character is still recognizable and will not cause undue problems for any castmates - if you wish to apply for a CRAU character, please contact the mod in advance.

Malleable protagonists from games like Mass Effect or Dragon Age are appable, providing they are applied with a solid and consistent personality that matches what is presented in the game and are applied as if no romance options were taken in order to avoid discomfort for any NPC castmates; this would go both ways - anyone apping the NPC castmates would have to app as if they were not romanced as well. Exception added June 1st: Malleable protagonists from dating sims or games that cannot be played without a romance option can be appable with a chosen romantic interest so long as said castmate is comfortable with it.

Characters who are dead in canon can be brought in from the moment of their death. When they arrive, they will immediately be transported to the hospital, where they will be treated with futuristic medical procedures and put through the usual orientation while they recover over a period of 24 hours.

Young or teen characters are allowed in Riverview, though younger characters may not be able to fully participate in dangerous missions, depending on suitability. Characters under 18 may not be involved in very sexual logs on the communities. Obviously making out and other romantic content is fine, as is fade to black for older teens, but please avoid smut with underage characters on the communities. CLARIFICATION ADDED 03/20/2018: This includes Friendr posts, IC inboxes, and other entries linked from the Taken page, all considered game canon.

While the game is sex-positive, non-consensual sex should not be played on the communities. Mechanics in the game are not put in place to encourage sexual assault, or to 'trick' characters into having sex that they would not normally have. This includes any objects, drugs, aphrodisiacs, or other mechanics used in adult prompts to facilitate consensual sex. If guidelines are included in these prompts to keep everything consensual, it is the player's responsibility to carefully read and follow those guidelines, but even if no guidelines are included, these prompts should not be used to play out non-consensual sex or to trick characters into sex they would not consent to normally.

Character abilities will not be nerfed unless they involve interdimensional travel or use of interdimensional spaces, or are otherwise gamebreaking. Please be aware that, ICly, the authorities in Riverview are capable of temporarily nerfing abilities in cases of violence or vandalism - please contact the mod if you need this type of interference in a thread.

Characters may arrive with whatever they have on their person including vehicles up to the size of a large motorcycle, or non-sentient animals/familiars up to the size of a large horse.

The communities are: [community profile] riverview for network posting, [community profile] riverviewlogs for in-person interactions, and [community profile] riverviewooc for OOC interactions and memes. Tagging should be done in the form of "canon name: character name" and players are responsible for their own tagging. Please see this entry for more information on how the devices and network works.

Canon updates are possible - it is ICly very difficult for characters to travel back and forth from their world to Riverview, so they would not be sent back home and brought back. Rather, the portal would expel a tech canister containing code for a memory download and physical restructuring (similar to the tech used for AC reward body mods) and the character would be summoned to receive them. Characters need to consent to the update, the authorities won't force it on them.

soooo ... hypothetically ... if some characters were to try and explore the abandoned city and to find whatever's left of any spacecraft that the original people who colonized the moon arrived in, what's the chance that they'd find anything at all? (clearly not expecting to find a fully functional spaceship for them to zoom off in lmao, but i was leaning towards doing a mission/general log(s) to this effect and having it be an ongoing project!)

I had a quick question about the setting. Are there any notable political/leadership NPCs that the characters would hear of if they asked around the city? And also, what kind of information about the Capital World would be available in Riverview?

Hello, hello, hello~I'm back from hiatus and have some questions! Specifically, about books. Would the books at the library be from all over the galaxy, or from a specific culture? Are there books that can be found in the character's worlds? And what about super popular books such as Shakespeare, or let's say Kafka?

Hi mods! I'm sorry, this is so silly. I went to tag my first entry in the community, but the canon name + character name is too long for a tag... In a case like this, how would you recommend I abbreviate? I was thinking of using the shorter, untranslated name for the series, but I didn't want to cause discontinuity in how things are organized.

Hello! I know when I first apped and Eichi got his performer jobs you said he could eventually be bumped up into heading them thanks to his leadership type skills. Would it be alright to say that he manages this with at least one or two of the clubs he works for during this AU player plot?

I was also wondering about the entertainment industry in Riverview in general. I want Eichi to really keep climbing since that's who he is as a character, so is there anything I should keep in mind about the style of entertainment that's welcomed here, or anything you can tell me about it just to give me a base to go off of? I know "idols" aren't really a thing here since that's such a culture thing, so Eichi wants to bring it over, but he will also adapt in order to succeed more so if there's anything that's especially popular that would be of note, that'd be great to know!

Additional question about translation magic!

So, soon Wikus isn't going to be able to speak anything resembling human language, but he can teach himself to speak the Prawns' language since he knows it. But, as long as he's speaking a coherent language, will it come out sounding like the common language? Or does it sound like clicky insect speak but is understandable anyway?

Also, more generally, can other characters understand languages they don't know (ie. Russian from the example), even if they can't speak or read it?

Hi mod!

I know you answered a question about books, but I'm curious about general media stuff. Would characters be able to find Star Wars movies or Indiana Jones or is that too fourth-wall and they can only find knock-offs of those movies/tv shows/etc? And are knock-offs only limited to canons currently present in Riverview or everything?

I'm so sorry I'm about to become super annoying. I went looking through the setting information and the above questions and I missed, or could not find information on the weather in Riverview. There's lots of green, and jungle, judging from the adventures, so I was thinking it must be wet weather to some extent?

I'm wondering because I've just reserved and plan to app a weather witch who stores storms, winds, minor earthquakes, tidal waves, hurricanes, lightning, basically all manners of weather and natural phenomenon within her hair. She can hold these things indefinitely as long as she maintains the ties holding her braids and the patterns they form, but once she uses something she has to be able to recapture the same force before it slips away, or replenish it from another natural source. I was wondering if this would be a common enough occurrence for Riverview, or if lightning storms were rare?

Second, kind of larger question, and this may be a case in which her abilities should be nerfed. Tris can sense natural weather and geological formations or occurrences at a great distance, such a great distance as to reach heights of atmosphere or depths of magma. Would she be able to sense any interesting formations or anything different about the internal structure of the moon in comparison to a fantasy version of Earth?

Thank you so much. I'm sorry to bombard you. I will probably have more questions if I actually get her accepted, but I thought these might be the most important ones to ask before the tdm goes up.

hello! I have a question about bringing items from home- Hana here pilots a mech unit that's-- probably larger than most motorcycles but isn't quite a mecha of the 'giant robot' variety; it's more akin to a suit of power armor. Hello again! I had a question about the AC reward of the plot/player plot built around your character by the mod. How does this work exactly? Would you create a plot based off of the character, or are there sort of preset plot ideas that you go off of? I'm interested in finding something for Eichi to do that's a little outside of his bubble, so I'm mostly wondering if I should be looking at something like that or what it would entail!

Quick question about suitability! I know vampires are taken care of by being offered synthetic blood and alternatives, but would the scientific team ICly be able to synthesize blood with specific genetics in them? This guy here can only feed off of a specific family line or else his body doesn't get any nutrition from it. I'd be willing to use AP for him to arrive with a sample for them to base it off if necessary, as well!

(Kind of related, but if they were to copy a provided blood sample, could/would they copy the magic too on the assumption it goes with why he needs that specific blood?)

Question regarding powers and abilities that are usually special circumstance, like in the Persona series- for Persona 3, they only have their powers during an extra hour at midnight when they have access to another reality, and for 4 and 5 it's the same, but they can enter the reality at any time. Should we just assume they don't have access to their persona/spells, or would they have them here?

I realize this is a relatively very one-off scenario in the grand scheme of things, and apologize if you've already answered this question since it seems you've had a few P5 characters apping!

I see that the legal age here is 18. I was wondering if rules were bent for characters that were under-aged but in their own worlds, were considered legal. For example, my character is around 17, but is considered a fully fledged knight and is permitted to carry weapons. Would this carry over to Riverview, or would his weapons be confiscated until he turned 18?

Something else I just thought of, are characters brought in with their full inventory? In video games, it's just a mechanic to make game-play easier, but it's hard for real people to be toting around multiple changes of clothes/suits of armor. How would this work in bringing a video game character with a large inventory?

I have a two-parter question:

1) How do canon updates OOCly work? I feel like I might be missing something somewhere but I can't seem to find anything on the FAQ page about it. Do we need any kind of mod approval before going through with them?
2) If a character canon updates via a canister, does that effect their powers? Since the canister allows "physical restructuring" I'm thinking yes, but I didn't want to assume.

So, easy question... or, okay, not so easy question. Sorry.

Actually two questions:
- I assume there's a cap on the overall strength and damage potential of monsters in the abandoned city. It's stated in info pages there are chances of monsters in the abandoned city but I can't see a large creature reasonably bypassing the wall without, well, notice.
- Is there a specific source material you usually pull for moon monsters from or just... go nuts? And is there a chance of maybe a monster manual for the less creative?

I know you already answered a question about aging up characters, so I apologize if this is redundant, but I figured I'd ask due to the specific circumstances.

As you might know, Game of Thrones aged up the ASOIAF characters to make the adult content slightly less skeevy. If I were to app from the books, would I be able to use the show age to lessen the skeeviness, or would I need to app from the show instead?

Thank you in advance! ♥

With the cast cap of 15, are Marvel TV characters considered separate from Marvel Cinematic Universe characters?

hi! so i have a possibly overspecific question -- how large is the inhabitable area of the quarantine?

ginko attracts mushi wherever he is and large concentrations of them would cause trouble for everyone, including him! so i'm wondering how much room there would be for him to move around the quarantine? alternatively i could just assume that the amount that came in with him is sparse enough that moving around wouldn't be a concern for several weeks/could be resolved by going out into the abandoned area for missions etc.

Hello! Considering apping another character (or possibly switching a current one I recently apped, in case I feel it doesn't work out) that's probably going to be interested in the entertainment industry.

She's already a somewhat established idol in canon. However, it's a younger character (12) who will be considered too young to have a job, likely be invited to school and have a case worker. Since she's studious and going to want to keep on improving herself, are there singing/dancing lessons that she can take at her school?

How would NPCs treat a younger character wanting to take up performing - mainly singing/dancing? Would she be refused, due to her young age?

Hey there!

I saw an earlier question regarding the music scene in the Quarantine, and the earlier questions about knock-off movies and books and TV shows showing up. I was wondering if this would also apply to real world music, too. Like, would characters be able to find music from Earth (or from other worlds/planets/realities/etc., considering the multiverse thing, of course) in the Quarantine? Would it be easily available?

(Sorry if this has already been answered! I looked back through everything and might’ve missed it.)
