riverview: rules and procedures

rules and procedures

rules

Play nice. If you are making the OOC atmosphere of the game toxic for fellow players or the moderator, there will be consequences. This includes all the standard accepted rules of roleplay: don't infomod or godmode, keep IC separate from OOC, don't fourth-wall without permission, stay in character, and don't try to hog the spotlight all the time. All offenses will be handled on a case-by-case basis, as no two situations are the same. The mod reserves the right to issue warnings or remove players from the game, depending how serious the offense is, and to refuse applications or reserves based on a strongly demonstrated history of toxic behavior.

procedures

Reserves will be open from 10:00 PM EST on the 15th of every month until 10:00 pm EST on the 1st of every month, when applications open; reserves will be valid until 10:00 pm EST on the 7th of every month, when the application cycle closes and the reserves page will be cleared.

Applications will be open from 10:00 PM EST on the 1st of every month until 10:00 PM EST on the 7th of every month. Application challenges are not currently an option, though applications may be submitted for a reserved character in case the reserver doesn't follow through or is declined.

Character caps will be 2 per person with subsequent character slots to be purchased with activity points to a maximum of 4 characters per person. There will be an overall game character cap of 125 characters. These caps may be re-evaluated depending on moderator workload. There will be a cast cap of 15 characters per canon; this may be re-evaluated as needed.

Activity Check will be open from 10:00 PM EST on the 1st of every month until 10:00 PM EST on the 7th of every month. All comments used as activity proofs must be dated between the first and last days of the month and be posted to an entry from either the current or previous month.

● All players will be required to submit 1 thread of 10 or more comments for Activity Check proof.
● However, if your comments are 150 words or more, only 5 comments will be required. In this case, the 5 comments do not need to be consecutive, but they must be part of the same thread.
● Borderline word count comments will generally be 'rounded up.' For examples of what 150 word comments look like, please click here.
● In all cases, threads may be from either the log or network communities.

● Newly accepted characters will not have to provide activity proofs for their first month. They will be required to provide a link to their response on the Taken Characters page, and, if applicable, the Occupations page.
● If a player fails to reply to Activity Check they will be swept, and it will be treated as a drop, including the one-week grace period to rejoin without an application. If a character is swept for non-response and wishes to rejoin during the grace period, they would need to provide activity proof at that time.
● If a player doesn't have enough proof of activity, they may post to the Activity Check with a request for a strike. There is no option for two strikes in a row, so proof must be posted the next month or the character will be swept. If players are showing a pattern of taking a strike every second month, that will be dealt with privately on a case-by-case basis.
● While threads on the Test Drive Meme and individual character inboxes can be submitted for Activity Points, they cannot be used for regular Activity Check.

Activity check standards have been put in place as of April 2018. These standards have been put in place to ensure that players are engaging with the game at large rather than sandboxing or squatting. Players submitting AC that shows a low level of engagement with the game for three months in a row (from any of the bullet points below) will be given a reminder to submit stronger AC the following month. If this reminder is ignored for three months in a row, the player will receive a strike for Activity Participation. Two strikes (total of 9 months low-engagement AC) will be considered grounds for removal from the game. The following types of AC submissions are considered low-engagement:

● Split AC: This is when a player submits two short proofs instead of one proof to AC standard. This type of split proof is intended only to avoid a strike in the event of a rough month and shouldn't be relied upon consistently.

● Castmate/Close CR AC: This is when a player consistently submits AC-length threads only with castmates, ship partners, or other close CR. This is one I don't always catch because I am not completely familiar with the relationships that every character in the game has, but I do notice when AC is submitted very consistently with only one other character or group of characters. Please note that attempting to circumvent this by just threading with the same friend's second character will be noticed and counted under this bullet.

● Late AC: This is when a player makes AC but is consistently on the warning list

Appable characters include fandom characters, original characters, or AU versions of characters that appear in canon and have a personality distinguishably different from the original. Characters should have sufficient released information in English (or translated to English) to form a personality that is less than half headcanon, and be from a canon that has been released for a month or more at the time of application.

Non-appable characters include fandom-based original characters, AU versions of characters that are not supported by canon, and characters so minor that a case cannot be made for their personality without large amounts of headcanon. Characters who are non-humanoid will not be accepted, except in certain specific cases where the character is partially humanoid (eg. centaurs, robotic characters, or shape-shifters) - if you are uncertain if your character fits this description, please contact the mod via PM. CRAU characters may be considered on a case-by-case basis with extra scrutiny and application requirements to ensure that the character is still recognizable and will not cause undue problems for any castmates - if you wish to apply for a CRAU character, please contact the mod in advance.

Malleable protagonists from games like Mass Effect or Dragon Age are appable, providing they are applied with a solid and consistent personality that matches what is presented in the game and are applied as if no romance options were taken in order to avoid discomfort for any NPC castmates; this would go both ways - anyone apping the NPC castmates would have to app as if they were not romanced as well. Exception added June 1st: Malleable protagonists from dating sims or games that cannot be played without a romance option can be appable with a chosen romantic interest so long as said castmate is comfortable with it.

Characters who are dead in canon can be brought in from the moment of their death. When they arrive, they will immediately be transported to the hospital, where they will be treated with futuristic medical procedures and put through the usual orientation while they recover over a period of 24 hours.

Young or teen characters are allowed in Riverview, though younger characters may not be able to fully participate in dangerous missions, depending on suitability. Characters under 18 may not be involved in very sexual logs on the communities. Obviously making out and other romantic content is fine, as is fade to black for older teens, but please avoid smut with underage characters on the communities. CLARIFICATION ADDED 03/20/2018: This includes Friendr posts, IC inboxes, and other entries linked from the Taken page, all considered game canon.

While the game is sex-positive, non-consensual sex should not be played on the communities. Mechanics in the game are not put in place to encourage sexual assault, or to 'trick' characters into having sex that they would not normally have. This includes any objects, drugs, aphrodisiacs, or other mechanics used in adult prompts to facilitate consensual sex. If guidelines are included in these prompts to keep everything consensual, it is the player's responsibility to carefully read and follow those guidelines, but even if no guidelines are included, these prompts should not be used to play out non-consensual sex or to trick characters into sex they would not consent to normally.

Character abilities will not be nerfed unless they involve interdimensional travel or use of interdimensional spaces, or are otherwise gamebreaking. Please be aware that, ICly, the authorities in Riverview are capable of temporarily nerfing abilities in cases of violence or vandalism - please contact the mod if you need this type of interference in a thread.

Characters may arrive with whatever they have on their person including vehicles up to the size of a large motorcycle, or non-sentient animals/familiars up to the size of a large horse.

The communities are: [community profile] riverview for network posting, [community profile] riverviewlogs for in-person interactions, and [community profile] riverviewooc for OOC interactions and memes. Tagging should be done in the form of "canon name: character name" and players are responsible for their own tagging. Please see this entry for more information on how the devices and network works.

Canon updates are possible - it is ICly very difficult for characters to travel back and forth from their world to Riverview, so they would not be sent back home and brought back. Rather, the portal would expel a tech canister containing code for a memory download and physical restructuring (similar to the tech used for AC reward body mods) and the character would be summoned to receive them. Characters need to consent to the update, the authorities won't force it on them.

➛ 7th: activity check closes; applications close; reserves expire and reserve page is swept

Hello! I have a few questions for a character I'm apping, should he get in:

1) Tim has some hacking ability, what would he be able to get from a foray into the government systems, if any? Are there any monitoring apparatus in the city he may notice?

2)As an emancipated minor (17), he doesn't need a legal guardian's approval/permissions in his canon, but would there be any restrictions on him besides not participating on the 18+ logs in riverview?

3)He stopped going to highschool due to more pressing concerns, and I see that alternative educational measures are a thing- is there an equivalent of getting a GED certification or online courses/degrees assuming tertiary education is a thing?

4) Would his bo staff/utility belt be confiscated prior to getting a youth license? (And if so, how long would the process take?)

Looking at this for the future and have a few questions mostly due to her canon (Lemony Snicket novels).

1. Could she skirt the whole idea of guardians? She would be 16-17 since Violet would be from the final novel (with movie face) and well she's got every reason to distrust adults (thanks Count Olaf).

2. More than likely won't happen but could she come with one of her little sisters? Sunny's a toddler and Beatrice is just as little.

3. Would college be an option over the high school at least for some classes (especially math and science).

4. More of a what-if since her brother is rare around DW: could the siblings eventually live together and act as guardians for the little ones?

Sorry for the novel!

Hello! I've been trying to dig up info, but it doesn't seem to be anywhere I've landed (and boy egg on my face if I've missed it somehow).

The rules and procedures detail what happens on the IC end as far as canon updates go, and I understand that pretty well! I've been wondering what the OOC steps are for canon updates, though. Do players need to fill out a form/send a PM to the mod journal with relevant info to confirm an update/etc., or do they just update their information on the taken list to match their new canonpoint once they've put it into effect?

Thanks so much for your time!

Hello! I have a question about characters with supernatural bonds, somewhat related to this one! Basically, I was curious about the opposite scenario, where the bond and all it's benefits and drawbacks are kept intact.

The character I'm intending to app (Iskandar from Fate/Zero) is very powerful, but his ability to sustain himself and the frequency at which he can use certain skills is limited by how much magic power his partner (Waver) has, which isn't a lot. The two also share a limited psychic link, and Waver is able to give Iskandar commands that he's compelled to follow.

Would to be alright to keep that bond intact so long as Waver and Iskandar are both present in game? I'm completely fine with the limits (actually, I'd slightly prefer to have them than not) and I have a friend who is intended to app Waver with me, so this is hopefully something that would come into play right away.

I guess this really only applies to him specifically, but maybe it will be something that works for other characters with alternate forms/identities.

I'm working on finishing his app and I came to a realization and question. I mostly want to ask this in the case of Ryo Asuka/Satan. I want to take him from the end of the series - as it makes sense with the premise of the game. However at the end of the game he's Satan. I was wondering, since it's implied he can reincarnate - if I can have him returned to his "human" form of Ryo Asuka while still taking him post canon with the post-canon knowledge/memories. This also helps nerf him a tiny bit - since he is Satan.

Thanks!

Partly for me but could help others with a similar problem.

In Gotham at the moment we just got our 3rd actress for Ivy Pepper (the eventual Poison Ivy) and its explained via ongoing plot (trying to avoid spoilers for anyone not current). In this case if apped I would be using her second actress till more info is known/end of the current season. Would that work and how would actor changes need to be addressed otherwise (pending the canon of course)?

TIA!

Hello! Question: The month mark for the newest release of "A Wrinkle in Time" is April 9th. I'm wondering if it'd be possible to app within this upcoming round or would anyone apping from this canon need to wait for the May app round as the round ends two days before the month mark?

Thanks so much!

Edit: I was able to find that you all are willing to be flexible if it's one or two days off, but is that from the start of an app round strictly fixed to the 1st of the month or for the duration of it? Thanks again and sorry for the edit.

Two questions, both of which may end up being inconsequential!

First, when it comes to advanced/altered humans or cyborgs, would those modifications likely come up on the bioscan, and if so, how many raised eyebrows might someone who lied about having them get?

And second, about the translation magic. Is it flawless or could it have minor hiccups? For example, if a character's from a culture that doesn't distinguish between blue and green is talking about colors, would the translation automatically lead to the right color, or could it/the character mess those up? Cultural differences in language and pronouns are a notable theme in Breq's canon, and I wanted to check whether it'd be feasible to play around with those in game.

Thanks!

Let me know if this has been asked before. I went through the pages, but didn't find it.

For a character who is post-death and revived in the hospital, will the medical staff tell or inform them in any way that they died? If my character asks, would they tell him that, yes, he or she did die?

How strict is the age cutoff for perimeter guard cadets versus regular members? I don't have a strong preference either way as a prospective player, but ICly, Pidge would try to bypass cadet status based on her combat experience as a member of Voltron and her intelligence in general. Working against her would be that she's only just turned 15, and she's pretty small for her age, so I could easily envision her arguments being less than fully compelling.

I tried to find more OOC information on the flora of Riverview, apologies if I've missed this somewhere! Mostly I was interested to know would any plants native to Earth (and also my character's universe) be found in Riverview? Such as monkshood, fool's parsley, mistletoe, verbena, honeysuckle, mandrake, etc. I'm interested to have my character resume her tinkering with herbalism and potioncraft, and wondered if she'd be able to find ingredients either in the wild or in the stocks of the vendors?

Question for you re: canon updates and the activity bonus point option.

From my understanding, canon updates are available essentially free of charge at the player's discretion via the canister downloads. However, if a player wants a character to truly "live through" the events in their canon by going home and then coming back having experienced said events, this would require the round-trip back home bonus point redemption at 2000 points.

While I don't plan on canon updating Skye for at least a few months from now, I'm struggling to see how it would be feasible for me to reach that kind of point level after even a six-month waiting period. Is there an option to discuss canon updating her via more traditional IC experience methods outside of this bonus point program?

(Also, it's totally possible I'm 100% misunderstanding the canon update / round trip process. Please correct me if I am!)

Hi! I have a question regarding the canon updating system. I see that it's explained as a canister that is ejected by the portal that contains memories and a physical modification, which means they don't leave. 1) if they aren't gaining any new powers, do AC points need to be used to pay for it? and 2) Would it be possible to fit a hiatus into doing this update? Essentially, could I hiatus, and have them doing a canon update when I come back, and do I need to submit for the canon update?

Hello! I was wondering, what's the policy on characters who have sapient objects?

More specifically: Jintetsu here has a talking sword named Haganemaru, who used to be a human. Since Jintetsu's vocal cords are permanently damaged, he can't speak on his own, and since Haganemaru is a sword, he can't really do anything on his own (including speak, if he's too far from Jintetsu). They have separate and distinct personalities, and can interact with each other (even if the conversations are a little one-sided), but they depend on each other to function semi-normally in everyday life, and are almost never apart. Is it okay to come back as Dodger from an earlier part of his timeline without apping him separately? That is, bringing him in as a 16-year-old without any Riverview memories. He'd be significantly different from a personality standpoint but most of his app would be largely the same and he's been accepted as an adult, so... yeah.
